ParticipantThat’s not your internet’s fault, but more likely your computers. Are you running alot of applications at the same time? This can bog down your computer and cause it to freeze up.

MemberMake sure that your temporary internet files and temp folder are empty also. If your computer is slow it might take time to process all of the files. I saw a friend with a Gigabyte of temp files and his Cable connection was going about half speed.

MemberWell it just freezes then kicks back on!
How do I get rid of all those applications that are running at the same time?

MemberYou either close them or push Ctrl+Alt+Dlt and in task manager to go to processes and look for stuff that doesn’t need to be running. I don’t suggest that you close something when you don’t know what it is though.
A test can be done to see if one of your programs is slowing your computer.
Go to Start > Run >> Type Msconfig >>> And switch the loading option to “diagnostic startup.” This will only load programs required to run windows when you boot up your computer. (It will boot up as if you just bought the computer and have installed nothing but windows on it) If you have Norton Internet Security your internet will not work if you turn it off in Msconfig.
Simply go back to msconfig and change the setting back to “load at startup programs and services” to get everything back to normal. Your internet may not work if you switch to diagnostic startup and if it doesn’t, you will have to restart the computer after switching back for the internet to renable.

MemberOk I did what you told me to do. My computer is runnin even faster. But im not sure yet about my connection of internet if it will continue to do what it was doing. Anyways, when I did what you told me it asked me to restart my computer. I did so. I came back into windows and all the colors are weird. On the destop I right-clicked and slected properties then selected Settings. I changed my colors from 16 colors to 256 colors. It asked me to restart my computer again. I came back into windows the colors never changed. I did this about 5 times and still no changes to the color. The screen looks mostly gray and stuff. Its hard to read. Please help!

KeymasterAnytime anyone comes to me and says their computer is freezing, my first question is how much is loading in your start up program? My solution to that is.. If you have an icon on your desktop you really don’t need it starting up in your start up program. The only thing I have running in my start up is my norton’s internet security. My second question is, How long has it been since you have cleaned out your cookies? I have found using internet options to clean out your cookies is ok.. but alot of files get left behind.. I suggest using this program to help clean out your cookies. http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ go to downloads and download the program.. You will find it doesn’t leave anything behind.
My third and fourth questions are .. Are you sure you have done all of your windows updates and is your anti virus up to date?
If you have done all of these .. If might be some software you have downloaded recently that might be conflicting with another and causing you problems.. Xp has a wonderful rollback.. you can go back to the day you knew you weren’t having any problems of course you lose whatever you downloaded after that day .. If its only been a couple of days it would be worth it to me.. Just to get the problem solved..
Finally, Like they said it may just be your computer is old and either needs reformated or you may just need a new one.. Make sure you check out all possibilities before you decide to trash your computer. And No program is worth disabling your firewall.. that is the only protection you have right now so please for your safety and others I don’t suggest you disable it.
Justified

KeymasterHere is another program that will help you with your start up programs.. Msconfig is good but sometimes you can’t read the descriptions of all that is starting up . http://www.snapfiles.com/get/startupinspector.html This program will run a test on your start up programs and give you a full description on what is running and what program it belongs to.
Hope it helps

ParticipantWhat Operating system do you have?
If it’s Windows XP Home Edition, you may have no real options but to re-install, I know this happened with my moms 1.3Ghz, and it runs just fine with XP Professional now. (Heh, you know I was pissed at XP Home when I buy an XP Pro license for a computer I don’t use)
