My friend has WindowsNT and we try to install windows98 on it and it seems liek nothing is working! We kept going through the setup and it completes but WindowsNT is still there! No Windows98? Can you help us out? She hates NT!
Why would you install Windows 98? Is the system capable of running a better OS like 2000 or XP? But what doesn’t she like about NT? NT is graphically like 95, but with IE4 + desktop “update”, it functions almost like 98. I don’t think you’d gain much with the switch from NT 4 to 98, sure compatibility used to be an issue, but I haven’t had that problem lately. 2000 would be a much better upgrade.

Though I don’t recommend it, to get rid of NT, you need to select “Boot this computer w/ CD-ROM support” at the 98 boot menu with the disc in. From there, type in ‘fdisk’. Read and follow the directions, they are pretty simple to understand. After getting rid of the old partition and creating a new primary partition the size of the disk, exit, fdisk, reboot using ctrl-alt-del, boot back into the computer on DOS w/ CD-ROM support, and type in ‘format c:’. This should format the drive. When that completes, type in D: (or R:, depends on what drive is the set as CD-ROM at boot) and then type in setup.exe. That should do it, any more questions, feel free to ask.
Ok! I can try! But what if it doesnt work? Can I reinstall it? The only reason she want’s Windows 98 is to have MSN 6.2. But what I am worried about is if it doesnt work, am I guaranteed to be able to reinstall windows NT if I have the cd? (We have the CD)

uh…. you mean the instant messenger program or the MSN browser/explorer (sorry I dont know much about MSN explorer, i’ve never really used it). if all you want is the messenger, all you have to do is download and install it, there’s absolutely no need to install a different operating system!! of course I could be misunderstanding you, could you clarify what you meant by that?
Im taking about MSN Messenger 6.2. She wan’ts to get it on her computer. But there I sno version for MSN 6.2 that goes on Windows NT. The only one she can get is MSN Messenger 4.0

correct me if i’m wrong, but NT is pretty much the same as 2000, so i’m sure she can still download and install 6.2 with no problems. if nothing else try installing it anyway, and see if there’s any problems that you notice. i’m pretty sure you dont have to get an entirely different operating system
Tigerblade, NT 4 only supports MSN Messenger 5. NT is most similar to 2000 under the hood. Graphically, it features the 95 interface (with IE 4 it is just like 98). I run an NT server, 2000 was huuuuge upgrade.
Seb Thib, she should be able to get Messenger version 5 on that machine. I don’t exactly see the entire point in switching OSes to get a new version of MSN Messenger, but if you had to switch, upgrade to 2000. Support for NT 4 from MS is over end of this year, 2000 would be a worthy upgrade for various reasons: future support, modern programs, hardware support, and graphical enhancements.
If NT 4 is still there, use a Windows 2000 disc to upgrade the OS while keeping settings, documents, and programs.
