MemberOk, you all just use the software, if you don’t like a new verison go back to the older ones. Since it is a free service, that is why they have the ads, if you think you can do better…make your own instant messenger. That is all I have to say. Also if you have alot of buddies on your buddy list turn on the sign on notification….

I dont think you understood what im saying. They CAN improve the look of AIM and still have their ad. For example, There are a million better ways i can think of to layout their “buddy linking.” They shouldve made a dropdown on the menu where u can expand it and chose your screename to switch too. For their ad, its fine, but Making audio-ads is going to far. I’m not going to have my computer run like a tv. I dont want commercials that i can see when im laying down on the couch. Would you want to hear a tv audio ad on ur headphones while your trying to listen to your music? And It would be VERY VERY hard to make my own messenger. There are problems like having to re-program the messenger everytime AIM changes a new version if i make my own addon. And if i make my own 3rd-party messenger I would have problems with AOL not cutting off my connection. I have the signon notification on but its still annoying ted:t be able to see whos on all at once.

MemberHi, I’ve noticed that the new version of AIM is signing me off when I leave my computer for too long ! I can’t find any information on it anywhere, but I’m used to leaving my away message on when I’m at work or whatever, and now I can’t do that, because the connection will be closed when I come home. All the conversation windows will still be there, but there will be no reconnect dialog or anything. I have DSL, so the connection there is no problem, and this has never happened with the older versions. I can’t find anything to change this in preferences either…it will stay connected when I’m sitting here doing something, but when I leave for a while (I’m not sure how long it takes) I’m always disconnected, never fails.

MemberThe AOL messenger allows me to contact my CompuServe friends, so I am using it with a Mozilla browser. The old CompuServe Instant Messenger allowed me to drag links from my favorites list into the IM, to send to my friend. The AOL messenger does not have the ability to stay on top (as the front screen), so when I try to pick a bookmark from my favorites list in Mozilla Firefox, the Mozilla screen is on the top, and the messenger screen is on the bottom. I would like to be able to set the im screen on top so that I could switch screens and not obscure the messenger.
The AOL offers many other functions. It allows voice communication (helpful for the handicapped). Games (but you have to have friends who are willing to play them, so far I have not had a use for them). Notifications when friends show up (I would like to select which friends to hear).
The notification pop up window can be shut down, but there is a glitch in the AIM software (I think) that prevents me from shutting down the sounds of a door opening and slamming as buddies sign on and off.
The AIM takes a lot of resources, but since Mozilla doesn’t have an instant messenger of its own, it is tolerable. My system resources were down to 48%–almost to the point of losing my connection to servers–requiring a reboot.
AIM apparently loads Wild Tangent tracking spyware, too. That takes some resources. Spybot Search & Destroy 1.3 can detect and remove the spyware, until AIM reloads it.
I understand that Instant Messengers are a computer security problem that can allow viruses, trojan horses, and other malware to enter the system. Still, their usefulness may outweigh their harm.
No one seems to be able to prevent the AIM home screen from loading at startup.
