MemberI like all the uncovered smilies. I have also been admiring so of other peoples smilies. Can anyone advise me how to replace the old smiles with new ones, and can I later switch back easily to the old smiles if I choose.

MemberAs far as I’ve been able to tell, the smileys themselves do NOT transfer across a message. When you insert 😉 you see it in your dialog, and your buddy sees it also. That’s ONLY because the same smiley exists on both machines. All that IS transferred is a short sequence of characters. YM knows to replace these with the graphical “equivalent”, once when you insert it, and in the other case when the message comes across to your buddy.
This is a GOOD thing – right now they’re GIFs – if that ever changed to a more modern format (one which can also serve as a container for an app) the floodgate would be opened for hackers. By sending only a character sequence, they prevent a gaping exploit.

MemberI read your remarks and found what you are saying to be true, however I think I found a tool that will allow the GIFs to be sent via yahoo. If you have the opportunity please check it out and let me know if you think it will work. Or as you stated will it open the floodgates for hackers?
… http://www.freddys-utilities.co.uk/smileyutil.php ..it’s the second option or offeredApril 21, 2003 at 10:16 pm #96982LouisSheffield
MemberYM uses the BMPs for the smiley selection menu (kinda like buttons).
The GIFs are what show up in the message window itself.
Character sequences (frighteningly called “code” in the link you supplied) seem to be the ONLY thing actually communicated (the GOOD part). The two options from the link give you a “selection palette” based on the entire set of BMPs or GIFs (depending on Option I vs II).
I exchanged the happy & sad GIFs … YM’s palette was unchanged since I did nothing to the BMPs, but the (intentionally) “wrong” kinda smiley showed up in an IM to myself.
The Option II from freddy’s gave me a selection plaette that was built from the GIFs, not the BMPs. It correctly showed the exchange.
Other than showing them all (which is of some value), it really doesn’t do any “end run” around Yahoo’s wisdom. I think they’re safe.
Let’s say you and a friend had a “doctored” smiley-GIF, on both computers, and in the right folder, etc. Option II gives you both a way of seeing the impending joke you’re gonna pull on one another.
It probably doesn’t do quite what you were looking for, but it does seem nicely harmless.
As for the “floodgates”, so long as only the “codes” are communicated between users, these call up “local” GIFs that either Yahoo had under its control (the installed defaults), or the GIFs you’ve subverted to be a joke (more or less entirely under your control)

MemberThank you LouiseSheffield for the well written and through explanation. Unfortunetly, that means I am unable to surprise a friend with a clever “smiley”. At any rate the first of those two tools I do find useful, as to avoid remembering all the sequences for the unlisted smileys.

Member… not out of the woods yet;)
One of the other posts about the “smileys-of-ill-repute” led to some links,
and some searches, and some links, and yet some more links …I’ll try ’em out over the next few days, although I’ll have to create a private chat room to test them in (just can’t fester this in a public one)
Funny is good, but I firmly believe in age-appropriate, so I’ll take the long road …
I’ll let you know if there’s nothing but smoke & mirrors (which I believe),
but in the event there’s something to it, I might only feel good about responding to that effect … this HAS to be an open forum

MemberYes I downloaded some “naughty smiles” and they worked fine. Perhaps it wasn’t from that site, now that I think about it. I believe they were listed as adult smileys, however they were cute and worked fine. In fact I still have a copy of them if anyone would like them.

Member… but the burning question i s …
Do they show up intact in anyone else’s message window without them previously downloading them themselves?
(hate to say it, but this could be fun – maybe dangerous, but fun nonetheless ;))
