July 4, 2005 at 12:26 am #125259aimnullParticipantanyone has reviews on this version?
i dont want to download it because of explorer being bundled .. i’ve told aol beta staff to seriously consider not bundling any other **** with any of their products because it just turns people away and increases the critisism.July 4, 2005 at 6:17 pm #125260Jon8RFCMemberI packed it up to not install aol explorer. http://jon8rfc.homeip.net/aim/versions/triton/aim_triton_setup_0.3.19.zip
If you don’t want to wait for the download (since this runs off my home connection and gets many hits), remove the aolexplorer part from the setup.ini file (i think that’s what it’s called). I’m not at home right now and can’t grab a setup.ini to look at what it exactly it says inside the brackets…it’s only one portion though, from specific brackets until the paragraph break.
July 5, 2005 at 12:43 am #125257SpikeMemberWell, I have to say, this is my first run with AIM 6.0b, and I’m a Trilly person, myself, but when I heard AIM finally did 6.0, I had to try it out.
At first glance, it looks very clean, new-age, you know, the fresh XP look all the new programs have. A few things I managed to notice upon chatting for the first time:
- Smileys look a lot wierder
- Whenever a smiley is typed, an animation behind the conversation runs that is extremely odd and startling to the unexperienced.
- An ad is placed at the top of every new conversation started.
- The top of the conversations window is tabbed with the following: Text, Talk, Video, Games, Pictures, Files. 3 are “Coming Soon”. Interesting.
- 8 fonts, 16 colors, and 7 sizes are currently available.
- Glitch: If you open the color picker dialog in a conversation, then un-focus the window, it remains floating there until you pick a color. Heh.
- You can now “Report IM Spam”, but the user cannot be on your buddy list.
- You can turn a two-person conversation into a chat room with one click of a button.
- The conversations are tabbed (if there is more than one) to the right of the conversation in vertical format.
Overall, I think they are doing a decent job updating the old-looking AIM 5.x series, if Trillian was not invented *shudder*, I would definately use it.

-The conversations are tabbed (if there is more than one) to the right of the conversation in vertical format.that should really be the other way around. i’d rather see the names of the people i’m chatting with along the top where i can actually read words, and see icons for the different “features” along the side.
Quote:You can turn a two-person conversation into a chat room with one click of a button.is that a good thing or a bad thing? i can see that becoming bad if someone accidentally clicks the button and turns a private conversation into public access.

Errr….allow me to clarify. The window shifts to an IRC-like interface, but until you invite another person, it doesn’t become public.July 5, 2005 at 5:09 pm #125253Someguy03MemberHas anyone found a way to remove the Ad’s from this latest Triton version? I tried the methods specified in earlier topics but rather than work, they made the settings menu inaccessible.

Don’t know how though. There is no actual “disable ads” radio button, but none of the other two are selected and I’d rather not find out what happens if I do select them.
