Okay, AIM has decided to do its own thing. Here’s what happened:
2 days ago: I try to IM. IM window freezes, AIM freezes. I need Task Manager to End Program.
I try to de-install so I can re-install. I try to Add/Delete Programs; it won’t let me.
I figure I’ll just try to install latest version. It tells me I can’t because of Pop-Up Blocker.
I change settings in both IE and Firefox to allow pop-ups from aim.com, aol.com, aimexpress.aim.com. No change.
I then change all settings to allow all pop-ups from the world…no change.
I try to shut down computer; won’t let me. Finally, after clicking on ‘shut down’ 3X, it shuts down.Next day: start up is fine, AIM starts just fine. I go to IM buddy, freezes, deja vu all over again.
I run Norton Internet Security 2005 (even though it runs automatically every night. It comes up clean.
Today: repeat of above.
I check this forum and try the AimFix. It says it’s ‘killed’ something and quarentined it.
Tried installing Trillian. After clicking on ‘download’, I get the little hourglass for a few seconds, then nothing. No error messages…nada. Now: using SiliconMonkey WebAIM. I tried to use AIMExpress, but I keep getting the message about pop up blockers being on…when they’re not.
System:
Dell Dimension 8300, XP Professional Service Pack2.Can anyone point me in right direction? I did check out some of the other threads here first; even tried downloading an older version of AIM. That gets me all the way to ‘launch’, then nothing happens and I can’t ‘remove’ program.
Thanks in advance.

All come to the same thing. The reason you should do this is because Add/Remove progams doesn’t always find the uninstall file, so it can’t help you sometimes.
November 27, 2005 at 6:39 pm #134008abra1754ParticipantThanks! Okay, step 1 completed. However, in the Program Files folder, I still see:
aim (with the ‘running gold guy’ icon)
other files with ‘aim’ in the subject and the ‘.dll’ suffix. What should I try next?
November 27, 2005 at 7:22 pm #134006MrEggsaladParticipantThat’s easy, go into Program Files highlight the AIM folder, then simply press “delete”, and it’s gone!
November 27, 2005 at 8:03 pm #134009abra1754ParticipantSorry to be such a pain! I started deleting the folder, but get this message:
>>Cannot delete aim.exe: Access denied.
Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.<<The only way Aim could ‘currently be in use’ is if WebAIM counts.
Thanks yet again.
November 27, 2005 at 8:08 pm #134007MrEggsaladParticipantAh yes, the stupid message…do a Ctrl-Alt-Del and if aim.exe is running make sure to “end task”, then simply try again. WebAIM wouldn’t have anything to do with aim.exe, since it’s on the web.
