For the past few days, I have been unable to connect to AIM. I click sign on at the sign on screen and it will go through the steps: 1. connecting, 2. verifying user name and password, 3. starting services. It will stay on step 3 for about 20 seconds and then go directly back to the sign in screen without connecting. It doesn’t even give me an error message. Any tips as to what is wrong?
August 27, 2005 at 3:40 am #128756Jeff HesterKeymasterwhile on the main screen of AIM click on Setup. once you’re at the AIM Preferences window click on the Connection button. Change the port to something “random” (i suggest 13). while at this screen make sure the server reads: login.oscar.aol.com. if it does not (or changing the port to 13 doesn’t work) click on the Auto Configure button. this should automatically pick a server that you should be able to connect to.
if none of the above strategies work. i suggest that you check your hosts file for invalid entries. this file is located here: %windir%system32driversetchosts. to get this file open: Start >> Run (or Winkey+R) >> once at the Run Dialog type this into the box: notepad %windir%system32driversetchosts. the only entry that should be located in this file is 127.0.0.1 localhost. if there are other entires, you may be infected with virus/spyware/etc. remove the “extra”/invalid lines and save the file.
if none of the above work you should try to reinstall AIM. with a version from the official site http://aim.com/. you can also find original installers at Jon8RFC’s AIM Installer Archive (which is what i am going to call it). http://jon8rfc.homeip.net/aim/adremoval/ will lead you to some very detailed ad blocking “dealies”.
August 27, 2005 at 8:06 am #128758DED319MemberThanks for the help, but unfortunately I still am unable to connect. I reinstalled AIM with the latest version, but I still have the same problem. I used spybot to clean out any spyware I had as well. Maybe I have some sort of virus. I actually was able to connect once today out of many tries, but then I was unable to type anything in the chat box. Weird. I disconnected, but then wasn’t able to connect again.
August 28, 2005 at 3:06 am #128759DED319MemberI uninstalled my AIM again and this time installed version 5.2. Now I think I get connected, but I get the message “Your buddy list and buddy icon are not available currently, but they have not been lost. Please try again later.” So I tried making a new screen name. This time I didn’t get any error message, but when I tried to type something in the IM box, the program would freeze and quit on me. So what’s going on? All these different errors for different things I try. Any help would be appreciated.

If not, it could just be a weird, common server issue. Since you got the “your buddylist…but they have not been lost.” message, that sounds like the problem there. Just wait it out a few days and check it occasionally, that might do the trick.
