MemberOkay, bear with me. I’m a Messenger moron and I freely admit it, but rather than let a jerk get the best of me, I’m ready to beg for help. Here’s the thing, an ex I’m still friendly with (I don’t know why) has multiple Yahoo IDs. Sometimes lately when he IMs me, his name doesn’t appear in the messenger box preceding each entry – there’s just a colon. Like this:
tjon: Hi.
: Hi.(Sorry, I told you, moron.) His ID doesn’t appear below either where it would go with the “___ is typing a message” alert. I can pretty well figure he’s doing this to prevent me from finding out what ID he’s logged in under, but HOW is he doing it? It’s annoying. Please help. Thank you.

MemberWhat he probably did was going to Tools > Options > Personal > Display Name > hold down ALT and press 160 at the same time and you will see your display name that way.

MemberOK Im steady try’n to figure this out! I know somehow some people were able to be in chatroom and when they typed it would’n show thier name just a : but dont know how they did it and how they would or could in a PM.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Example
Snuggles: ok testing this, do you still see me as snugleupagainst?
BossBBB: i see you as Cat
Snuggles: hmmm what you put in as my contact info?
BossBBB: i think so
Snuggles: ok so somehow this guy is changing what she sees the names as.
BossBBB: Well maybe if I had never changed your name in your profile (as I see it), your changes would show up for me too?
Snuggles: see i dont think it would, as these setting are stored on the individuals pc and makes them see what they see.
Snuggles: i know somehow some people were able to be in chatroom and when they typed it would’n show thier name just a : but dont know how they did it and how they would or could in a PM
BossBBB: me neither
That was a PM between me and Jeff. See this is what I saw because this is how I have “MY” settings for “OUR” IDs. Jeff saw me as Cat and Im sure himself as Self if he has not changed his setting for what he sees his own ID as. Tjon check one thing for me ok? Right click his ID on your friends list and then click where it says Edit Contact Info. Does anything show up as a Nicname or First Name etc etc? I dont know if not then all I can come up with is that YES he does know of someway to trick yahoo to make his name show that way. I know not any real help but maybe this will inspire some of our more “PC program knowing inside and out” members to get to the bottom of this.
Brian I dont see a Tools/Options/…. on Yahoo! Messenger or in the PM window of Yahoo! Messenger. Tjon is talking about a PM window from her Yahoo! Messenger. What are you meaning?
ParticipantI think Brian’s got his IM clients mixed up, as thats how to do it in MSN Messenger ;).
It seems rather difficult to do this trick in Yahoo. Brain is likely correct about the alt + 160 code to get a blank name which would appear as if you are only seeing the colon.
Snuggles is right about the problem with contacts not necessarily seeing what you see. In my test I edited my contact info (Login -> Edit My Contact Info…) to just alt+160, making my name appear blank. Heres the results:
: <<<do you see my name here
: or is it blank?
Anonymous : no i see it
Anonymous : tripshifteroneIt appears blank on my end, but the other contact still sees my Yahoo login name. I also noticed that all contacts login name seem to appear at the top of the conversation window ie: (Anonymous) – Instant Message. So if you cannot see his true name there, then it seems to me he must have somehow obtained a blank login ID. Thats the best I can come up with so far. Someone please prove me wrong!
MemberYes shifter, I did get mixed up. I apologize. I don’t know where my mind was.
MemberMaybe they set their nickname in their profile to blank, but in the top of the PM box where it says “TO:” you would see their real ID.
You can also set your own contact info in messenger, like you did shifter, then right click someone’s ID and click “send My contact info” they will then receive this and see the custom info you entered (i think they must accept it) then they will just see whatever was in the firstname,lastname or nickname fields, which could well have been the blank.
Hovering over the ID, or looking at the TO at the top of the box should reveal the real ID.
MemberOk this is a diffcult one and I’m only taking a best guess here. But it is possible to type html code into a yahoo messenger box and it will appear blank with only the username showing. The html simply dissapears, e.g. a person with Xyz ID could type in the following: ().
I have added the brackets just incase it dissapears from this post but the recipient would get the following message from the user Xyz:
Xyz:
So what if the user typed html code as his username then it would simply dissapear. Would it work? I dont know cos I havent tried it, but like Isaid, its just a best guess.
MemberIts me again. I have made a couple of typos…..damn! Well Ive had a late night, thats my excuse and I’m sticking to it.
the following code should read (), minus brackets of course. Try it in ur own IM box and you will see what I mean
MemberOk, so I was bugged by the valididity of my own answer and decided to check out the above by creating a new username. It seems I was not totally correct because you can only use numbers or letters for a new ID. Well, it has been a while since I signed up with yahoo.
Anyway, the fact is that people do use letters and symbols for their username but how I dont know. If someone out there knows I would be very interested in knowing the answer. I still think Im half right though, about the html, but I just need to find a way of getting symbols into a yahoo ID.
This ones gonna bug me…….I can tell!
MemberThis is great, really. I feel so much better that it isn’t something simple that I should have been able to catch onto. The jerk is a programmer, by the way, but to tell the truth, I always got the impression he wasn’t that good. Maybe he had help.;) Thank you all.
