Looking for a plethora of “freestanding”, “floating”, no install programs.
Examples:
Mozilla Firebird
Future PlayerKnow any? Or, even better, a whole site of ’em?

January 18, 2005 at 9:57 am #111654Lurking_BiohazardMemberBy “no install” I mean you can plop it in a folder and run it from anywhere.
Desktop, CD/DVD, etc. No installing the program.January 19, 2005 at 8:03 am #111652Someguy03MemberJust wondering, but what do you need this for? And also, many might refer to your “non install” downloads as binaries.

A ‘binary executable file’ means nothing more than a computer program. A setup program is just as well a computer program as the program it’s installing. I find Lurking_Biohazard’s description much clearer, to be honest. 🙂As for the programs itself, there are so incredibly much… Which type of programs are you looking for?

I tried to make it as clear as possible…
Looking for a wide assortment of programs really. I find it a pain trying to work (or do anything!) on someone else’s computer and they don’t have or haven’t bothered getting/installing certain programs. I would like to burn a disk of various programs that I can take with me anywhere and don’t have to worry about changing someone’s computer. Mostly looking for utilities, but any would be welcome!
January 20, 2005 at 5:33 am #111658TigerbladeParticipantwell… as for burning stuff to a disk… not sure about that. most programs that you would be able to use like you want would need to access and modify files on whatever they’re running from. i use my usb flash drives for a lot of stuff like that, i know one IRC client i used, Xircon, worked on a flash drive (i think). spybot and adaware can run off a flashdrive, so can samurize… etc. its really just a matter of finding programs you use and seeing what works.

^^ Sorry. When once looking for the “no install” version of Mozilla FireFox and after much googling, many people were saying that you could find the “Mozilla Nightly Build Binaries” on their FTP site. When downloading the “binaries”, it consisted of a Zip which had a folder containing all the files to run it instead of an installation file. Thus, I got the impression that the binaries were simpy all the files needed to run the program compacted into a zip or grouped into a folder.January 20, 2005 at 7:46 pm #111659SpikeMemberI must say, though, it is going to be very tough to find decent programs that are freestanding, becuase ANY good program always has a DLL or Registry key associated with it, which are created at startup. So to thee I say Good Luck!
