MemberThis morning I came across a very interesting web site, the web site was about Ogdens Basic English. Ogdens Basic english is a theory that using a list of only 850 words, a person can form perfectly good, simple english. Part of this theory is that any one could learn a language and speak it fluently learning only these 850 words.
“If one were to take the 25,000 word Oxford Pocket English Dictionary and remove the redundancies of our rich language and eliminate the words that can be replaced by combinations of simpler words, we find that 90% of the concepts in that dictionary can be achieved with 850 words.” I find this very interesting, if you wish to see the web site, here it is.August 21, 2003 at 12:21 pm #91455rustedtight
MemberOh my, so much colour would be removed from our communications that we may as well grunt (with 850 different inflections) and throw bones at each other as we sit by the cave entrance tending the fires.

MemberThe basic idea is to be able to learn new languages very fast and still be able to speak them fluently rustedtight.-.-…
And personally I do find it interesting, and am going to use this word list to learn Japanese, which I tryed a long time ago, but found too hard.August 21, 2003 at 1:39 pm #91454rustedtight
MemberAhhh, for that purpose it is ideal, basic communication is established so much earlier.
Use it as a tool of introduction.. yes, just not as a means to reduce language to the basic minimum for expression.
The more people we can communicate with the richer is our own life.
Good luck with Japanese you will enjoy it.
Let me attend to my cave-front fires. 😮August 21, 2003 at 9:14 pm #91456ShadowSlayer469

Let me attend to my cave-front fires. 😮Yes, I would agree too rustedtight, but I’m glad that you understand the point I was trying to get across now. And this system is very usefull for learning a language that you will only use a little, and not speak it every day.
