Yesterday I had to update to the latest messenger after constantly receiving a message at login saying ” this version will no longer be supported, we strongly reccomend that you update now.”
Now I really like old messenger without bells whistles emotes and all the junk that comes with it.
I’ve been to old version and tried again with a new dload to get older versions going but they just will not login unless I update. Is there any way to get round this blackmail?. Yahoo seemed fairly friendly once, compared to the ugly msn.
Cheers, and thank heavens for nerds… Neil

Since the newer version of Yahoo! came out almost one year ago, it was just a matter of time untili they phased out the old. It’s just a matter of cost benefit…Yahoo! IM may be free, but it’s still part of a business. You ARE able to download the new messenger without the tabs and such showing on your screen. You can always add them on later on if your tastes change. But, that’s as close as you are going to get to the “old version.” Also, there is a way to turn off avatars…the only thing I do not know how to get rid of would be the emoticons…though I have to admit…I’ve never tried… 😉 Good Luck. 😀

It is possible to remove emoticons, IMVironments, and audibles, simply go to Preferences-Messages then under Miscellaneous just remove all the check marks to the things you do not want, and they will be disabled and not appear on your IM’s.

April 14, 2005 at 8:41 am #119337neilaniaMemberThanks for that,
I visited my local chat room after dloading the new version, yes i took all that stuff out in preferences.. and after a few mins I was attacked by an abusive user, that was trying to access my files then I was booted….Now that has not happened to me before this.. it led me to think that it was the new version with open ports or something.
Cheers thanks for the comments NeilApril 14, 2005 at 1:18 pm #119339NessaParticipantneilania wrote:Thanks for that,

Cheers thanks for the comments NeilActually, by taking off all those things in preferences should have made you less vulnerable to a booting. I myself have been using the messenger 6.0 since it came out and haven’t once been booted from it and i visit rooms where people get booted lots. I’m guessing someone from that chat room felt they really had to boot you and it could have happened even if you had that older version, it just happened when you changed….coincidence is all. And also, in Preferences you can also change that one detail under File Transfer, put “Never accept files from anyone” “Never allow others to download files from me” so you have more options to change things.
