KeymasterWhat gay Catholic bishop? I know there’s been a gay Episcopalian one in the news recently, but not Catholic (at least not openly).

MemberAren’t catholic bishops celibate?

Excomunicated?August 20, 2003 at 4:28 pm #91691sciencefeeling
MemberI was thinking as rustedlight…
I am catholic, and our priests are(? lol)….lets say they are suppossed to be celibate…
They “can” be gay, hetero, bisexual…but they cannot(? lol)….they are not suppossed to engage in a sexual relationship, cause they commited to be celibate.
Answering your questions, is very much unlikely that any priest would get excomunicated for having a sexual relationship with a woman, but there have been cases of excominicated gay priests…both of them broke their vows, but the reason why ones are punished and the others are not, escapes to my limited understanding.
Looks like breaking the vows is not the issue…they would run out of priests lol.
Catholic church as organization, looks at homosexuality as an illness, and, therefore, recomends to treat it as an emotional disorder. I don´t think I have to say most of catholic young community don´t share this point of view, and you will find lots of young priests that don´t either…but the church as organization has proved to be very slow in adapting to time changes. Anyway, what ends up happening is that we act against our laws (we get divorce..etc), and act like nothing happen, priests act like nothing happens and in 200 years, they may say divorcing is not that bad…August 23, 2003 at 1:45 am #91692Venomman
