October 16, 2002 at 8:05 am #66568SlumMemberI’m not sure if this is what you mean, but I am pretty sure you can create new groups… and each group can hold up to 200 names. I just think they limit one group to 200 names
October 17, 2002 at 3:08 am #66566redneckrafterMemberno the maximum is 200 nomatter how many groups of buddies you have… sadly
October 17, 2002 at 4:18 am #66559Jeff HesterKeymasterYou can expand the amount of buddies that you are allowed by going into regedit>HKEY_CURRENT_USERS>software>American Online>AolInstantMessanger(TM)>buddy . Then modify the decimal value of the Maxbuddies string to the amount of buddies you want.
October 17, 2002 at 4:31 pm #66564twistedmetalMemberDo you know if that way works with MSN Messenger?

January 5, 2003 at 7:37 pm #66571DJHyperbyteMemberMaybe a bit obvious, but try editing the registry when AIM is not running.

On NT-based machines (NT, Win2k, XP) you can deny yourself (and thus AIM) permission to modify the value, but these days it’s hard-coded anyways, so it’s pointless. But for fun:
Run regedt32 (not regedit!). Go to the previously mentioned Buddy key. Modify MaxBuddies to say 1000. Then, select the Buddies key. In the security menu, click permission. Click the advanced button. Deny Administrators and/or any of your users Set Value, Create Subkey, Create Link, Delete, Write DAC, and Write Owner. Remember to set this back if you ever want to change the value again (since you’ve just denied yourself modify permissions after all). And once again this only works for older versions of AIM.
