Actiontec announced Kid Defense 1.1 real-time Internet monitoring software.
Read the article, then share your thoughts.
Do you or your family use monitoring software? Is helpful, or a hindrance?
August 21, 2003 at 12:54 pm #56743rustedtightMemberHelp me out here….. “offers real time monitoring of 2 children by 2 parents”……….
HUH? Whats wrong with walking into the room the children are in and looking over their shoulders?
Is this technology gone mad?
Do we seriously need to remove ourselves from our childrens presence to actually remotely spy on them? Why? For who’s benifit? Our children would already be aware of our sneaky methods n just go down the street to an unmonitored friends house as our values would already be imprinted on them, IE lack of trust.Education. It’s about education … NOT in house spying. Surely if I raised intelligent children without the need to secretly spy on them then I have raised responsible lil people.
Trust them (You made them) they have your values.
Of course if you are not a parents rectum then this product will fill your free hours.August 21, 2003 at 1:23 pm #56747ShadowSlayer469MemberYikes! This thing is worse than a keylogger trojan! My parents trust me, and they should, this is just like spying. If you want your kids to be safe on the internet, don’t spy on them, just get a filter for restricted sites! If they would do this, there would be no reason to pry into there lives. I’m sure that any kid would not like there mom to be reading a conversation from them to there girlfriend/boyfriend! I’m sure that I would not. This is just a bad idea, if you want to keep them safe, get a filter.
August 21, 2003 at 8:29 pm #56742Jeff HesterKeymasterIn an ideal environment, there is an appropriate balance of trust and accountability (through parental involvement) that won’t necessitate such Orwellian measures as Kid Defense. But let’s face it… we don’t live in an ideal world. With so many single-parent households, parents away from home, kids on their own, etc… maybe it makes sense for some people to use something like this.
For the record, I’ve never used such software with my three kids. But we did move all the computers into one “family room” (rather than squirreled away in their bedrooms), and I’ve occasionally looked at their browser history. Since the computers are in a “public” space of our house and there is almost always a parent home, logging or even filtering has never been an issue.
August 21, 2003 at 9:21 pm #56748Road_RunnerMemberJeff, that’s a very fair (good) idea. Stories about parents spying on their kids (mainly when using computers) have been discussed on TV. It’s not ethical to spy on someone…very obtrusive! Nobody likes that!
This product sounds like an expensive waste of time unless you are desperate for control. It will take away from the relationship between parent and son/daughter. Get rid of the tracking devices. It’s always better to ask what websites he/she has seen and go in and take a peek, as rustedtight suggested. Seems to kind of scare off a kid from visiting certain places that he/she knows are wrong to be at.December 25, 2003 at 4:59 pm #56746FimusMemberQuote:quote:Parents can cut off inappropriate activity with one click.Heh, sounds like a trojan…
even if it’s technically not.December 26, 2003 at 12:24 am #56744DJHyperbyteMemberQuote:quote:Originally posted by FimusHeh, sounds like a trojan…
even if it’s technically not.Fimus, I’ve asked you this before. Please check the post date before you post a reply. The last post is from more than three months ago. Posting a useless reply like that isn’t gonna do much good then.
