I’m looking for a good program that can help me password protect and hide files on my computer that I don’t want anyone accessing.
Does anyone know of a FREE program that works well?
I downloaded Cryptainer LE found at http://www.cypherix.com/prods.htm but i’m not sure if it’s a good one because I’ve never used anything like this before.
Anyway, I have a few people networking with my connection and don’t want any unnecessary snooping to go on.
Got any tips?
BTW: what files should I hide or password protect and which ones should I avoid “hiding”.
Thanks
Hi Deedee.
I’ve used (free) AxCrypt for years, and it seems simple enough, and effective.
Others can still see the filename (and date, and aprox size) but have no way to see the contents.
I guess the only downside is IF you are careless and forget your password!
The only problem with Cryptainer LE is that when it’s not turned on..then my files aren’t protected/hidden. As far as I understood when reading about the program.
TrueCrypt is a good crypto tool that makes encrypted disks. The program can either use a file or an empty partition, and will create an encrypted filesystem that you can store whatever you want in, and will then be safe from anyone when unmounted. Anything stored in the encrypted disk is completely unviewable until mounted as a drive. Just remember that once mounted, anything on your computer can access the data.
