Ok, for all the designers out there, everyones got there own opinion about what they like to use for there graphics.
PhotoShop being more widely used among the buisness word, and being established as THE graphics program for the web designer, has been around and is not going anywhere.
PaintShopPro being a great program has just not made a name for itself in the webdesigners world, although i know many people that use this for personal use and have yet to see a company requesting a webmaster with paintshoppro skills. Also being the program of choice for schools, you cant get training in painshoppro from a college.
I myself use PaintShopPro, it was the first program i learned to use and i have never been able to stop useing it. I tryed photoshop a few times but found myself going back to paintshoppro everytime.
So for those of you that have used paintshoppro and photoshop let me know what you think, and if anyone else knows of any programs they would rather use lets compare them to PhotoShop too.
Another question i have for everyone is where do y’all think the world is gonna go with this, will PhotoShop always be the program of choice among companys and schools or in the future will companys let the desginer use there program of choice? Will schools start offering training with other software?
I personally enjoy Macromedia (well, Adobe now) Fireworks. It starts up a hellofa lot faster and the interface is much much easier to understand. The only thing I use Photoshop for now is brushwork and making things transparent, but thenwhen I’m done in PS I’ll import it into Fireworks when I’m done anyway.
see iv played with fireworks and freehand a little but i still cant pull away from paintshoppro, i dunno if its cuz i dont want to learn a new program or if i just that i prefer painshoppro to others
that reminds me i still have to install Photoshop CE… i’m curious to see how different it is from my current v7.

I am all for Photoshop, latest and greatest version.
When I first started in Graphics Design and what not, I used Paint Shop Pro, but then someone convinced me to switch to Photoshop. Let me tell you, the learning curve is greater, but once you know the basics, the things you can do will far surpass what you could even attempt to do in PSP.
I have Macromedia(Adobe) Fireworks, and I’ve opened it a few times, but it just seems way to remedial to me, it actually reminds me of MS Paint. That’s just my opinion, but all in all each program will have it’s pros and cons.
As for Spike’s comment how FW opens faster, it’s basically because Photoshop is more heavy, more features/plugins/filters and what not, and FW is light, built for speed/less features and what not. I’m not dissing on FW, it’s just the truth.
I know you didn’t mention FW, but people have brought it up, so I thought I would put my 2 cents in. If anything get the latest trials of all the programs, at separate times, so you:
1. Don’t have 3 time limits to worry about, thus limiting the amount of time you can spend with each program to try and love it.
2. Really learn the program, as I said Photoshop has a large learning curve, but once you learn the basics, it’s all good. I’ve seen so many people open it and uninstall it right there because they’re too used to the PSP interface, which is really a shame.Besides, in a year or so, will it even matter between Fireworks and Photoshop, since Adobe bought Macromedia? Again, just try them all, form your own opinions, but I am pretty sure if you get Photoshop, learn to use it, you won’t be disappointed.
Again, like I said, I’ll use PS for heavier stuff, yeah. But if I’m just cropping / adding text / resizing / doing a batch process, Fireworks has a more sleek interface for those kinds of things. Most of the more advanced stuff is a little more hidden, like masks and slices and animated GIFs. It really doesn’t matter what you use, the end result just has to be something you’re satisfied with.

paintshoppro has never let me down, when i invision what i need i can usually get it done with paintshoppro, but im doin basic website graphics, logos, backgrounds, etc, for what im doing i rarely need a heavy program to get it done
I’ve used PSP and PS extensively. I have them both installed on my PC, (legal versions too! ;-)) When you want to touch up a photo or do quick effects to a photo, Paint Shop Pro is the tool. For anything web-based design, including banners, web objects, logos, etc… it’s 100% Photoshop. I think Photoshop CS is about the best-dang software ever created.
I have also tried CorelDraw and Dreamweaver for various projects and for clients who had them installed on their machines, but honestly, Photoshop is the best for me…
Actually, I used to use it. Thought it was much simpler, started up nice and fast. It’s probably comparable to fireworks, same features, etc. and Photoshop is the grand daddy of image manipulation. Well, sometimes I don’t need all that junk, I just want to edit something quickly, so I use a lighter application. Each program has its pros and cons respectively, so there really isn’t a “better” or “worse”.
If you want to do EVERYTHING, use Photoshop. Paint Shop Pro and Fireworks are good if you don’t do real heavy stuff, but the reason most companies use Photoshop is just simply because it can do like everything. And like all have said before, they all have their ups and downs, but I’m a Photoshop user here. I (personal preference) didn’t like Fireworks and didn’t like using it, so I tried Photoshop which I didn’t like at first, but then I loved. So it’s really whatever you feel more like using. I felt Fireworks was also closer to Paint Shop Pro (Which I used to have LONG time ago), but I just didn’t like the way Fireworks worked. It really just depends on what you like using, I suggest downloading the trials and just seeing which you like the best. Photoshop has all the features you could ever want, Fireworks and Paint Shop Pro are very nice, lighter, but again have less features. If you REALLY want to learn how to do bunches of stuff, the GIMP lets you do that, nothing is really that easy in it, but the effects you end up with are awesome.
Like MrEggsalad said, Fireworks is nice for quick edits and what not, and Photoshop is good for everything else, BUT Photoshop also can do quick edits, so why not save money and get the one piece of software that does it all.
To me startup time is not an issue, so I have to wait a few seconds, but once it’s open, I usually never close it here.
Consider this, the newest version of PaintShopPro is $79.00, the newest version of photoshop is $649.00, newest version of Fireworks is $299.00.
Now, for someone developing professionaly yes go with adobe, most likely if it’s your career then youv been trained in it and the job will supply you with the software anyway. But for those of us doin it for fun, hobbie, or maybe just need a quick fix for your projects, PainShopPro would be a better solution. I dont know of anyone that spent $649 so they could play with it. It’s not a toy, you could hurt yourself.If you plan on doin professional work, or starting a career that requires it then yes adobe is the better choice, but for those looking to satisfy there personal pleasure then paintshoppro is cheaper then fireworks and they both do alot of the same things, PaintShopPro has more then enough features to support your curiousity. If you like it and enjoyed designing graphics then an upgrade to adobe could be in order, after getting the basic education of layers and what each mime type does learning how to use photoshop would be alot easier. just a change in programs and finding where everything is in the new software.
Notice: im not trying to downgrade adobe in any way, i just dont want someone to read this and get the idea that these things are simple and easy to work with and find they dont enjoy workin with them at all and be out of $649.
