Great dialog!
One of the most effective ways to impress upon people the need to post quality is to post quality.
Here’s how I’ve done this in the past. Let’s say someone posts an “I dunno…” reply to a question. Rather than spending time worrying about the “I dunno” post, I would look at the original question posted, and then post a solid, quality response. As you pointed out, even if you don’t know the answer, you can always provide some additional value (suggesting other places to look, etc.).
This does two things. First, it focuses my energy on the initial question, instead of getting sidetracked by some dumb “I dunno” guy. Second, it provides a subtle lesson to Mr. I Dunno. They see a good example of the kind of post they SHOULD be writing.
Do this consistently and they’ll either try to elevate their own level of posting, or decide they really aren’t up to the task and slink off.
It doesn’t work every time (some people are too thick-headed to get it), but it’s generally a better way of dealing with the situation.
I think that, in general, when people consistently see high-quality posts, they tend to try to do the same. Nobody wants to be the dummy in the room.

Alright i’m in a hurry because i’m off to school, but had to respond to you on this! The report post was actually for detn8r’s post: https://bigblueball.com/forums/yahoo-messenger-support/38325-100-cpu-only-specific-user-name.html#post209678 😛
But either way, don’t worry about it! We know you aren’t advertising, just trying to help. (This goes to both Dermot and Det.)

Should you give yourself a temporary ban? :p
October 31, 2006 at 2:38 pm #153924DermotParticipantWas thinking about deleting my post then coming in here to complain about myself deletin it lol
then temp ban myself for my evil doing on myself 😛
yeah vanessa, i was wondering which one of us they were reporting on, but nonetheless reporting ourselves to ourselves was funny at the time, and it was posted to me as been the mod online at the time lol
if only they were as quick to report the actual real spammers i would be great.
November 1, 2006 at 8:19 pm #153919SpikeMemberBlech. To me, personally, having all this talk over something as simple as this shows that we’ve got nothing better to do, and that kinda saddens me. It’s like we’re all just kinda sitting around, waiting for something to happen, then when we finally get the excitement, we’re all over it like it’s the most important thing in the world.
Now don’t get me wrong, I agree with Jeff, discussion is good, and I enjoyed reading everyone’s comments. But I just think we could push conversations like this one to more important things rather than just one member who didn’t know how to use a forum or was spamming, or whatever you wanna call what he was doing.
Where has all the BBB enthusiasm gone? Really, where did the days go when we got all hyped up about the next “Song and its Story”, or how about the Launch Party? That was a blast, and we sure had plenty to discuss then, I’m sure. But now it’s just kinda dwindled into us pouncing on the most remote of events. I’d much like to see our energy and ideas channeled into something a little more productive / interesting than a simple clueless user. 🙁 I’ve got to go otherwise I’d post more.
November 1, 2006 at 8:43 pm #153925DermotParticipantDoesnt you replying to it basically mean the same thing?
enthusiasm is here, but it’s not like people want help all the time and sometimes you can help and sometimes you can’t and venture to other areas of the forum and find somewhere to comment on or participate in some means, better than not at all.
The comments that were here are in a forum only disclosed to mods and admin so it’s not really a bad thing, its not gonna be a party on a discussion board everyday and shouldnt be under any delusion to expect it.
It has to be said the programs that this board provides discussion and help for have greatly improved since its inception and with less people needing help for a less faulted application you wont get as much traffic as before. I doubt jumping on a dwindling moment is the right way to describe little spam infractions on the board, however they are there and if you ignore just the slightest of them like virii it could have the possibility for a epidemic.
Not all users have been at or know about the launch party or it’s meaning or its indicaton to BBB and thus even mentioning it here is evidence of that, i for one didn’t attend or was in the means then to do so. It’s pretty evident that the whole “my area, dont participate without letting me know” problem has hindered a lot of activity on BBB and personally think it’s not needed and shouldnt be like that.
I think all sections should be open freely for all, meaning if you’re a mod your a BBB mod not just a “Yahoo! one” or “WLM one”, when i first got asked to be a mentor by shifter he mentioned about chatting with your advisor etc and having chats and been close to your team leader etc, well i can until vanessa became a team leader i have little to nothing in that means, that includes you spike, oreo and any other team leaders i didn’t mention or just don’t know at this moment.
While this may be needed in most occasions it is always good practice to keep up communications and relations with your fellow staff members and converse about such revelent issues like spam, not just saying whats wrong and right about other staff members posts, you’re a team and as a team there is a responsibility from all such people to converse about anything thats been arisen by staff members whether its little or large.
I think i will leave it at that before i type a book lol
sorry for all mispellings and typos in advance.
November 1, 2006 at 9:49 pm #153920SpikeMemberAgreed, and like I said, I like seeing us converse like this, it’s good. I just wish it were channeled into something more… productive? interesting? I can’t put my finger on it, but that’s the basis for it. Don’t get me wrong, I like this. But if I could have chosen, I would have picked a better topic, that’s all. 😉
November 2, 2006 at 12:00 am #153913OreoMemberWell…I think this is productive…don’t sell this short. By sheer discussion we are getting out our feelings on an issue. One thing that I like about this discussion in particular is that we’ve kept it pretty much on the up and up. No real finger pointing at staff etc… Just because this is not the most exciting issue does not mean we do not get something out of it.
It shows that we can express ourselves and kind of have an idea how the team-at large- feels we should control the boards. Taking care of “little” issues like this means that other issues that pop up similar to it can be handled in a way that a person can take action without second guessing. It also helps in that there’s a precedent and all sides have been discussed and looked at previously.
At the moment, honestly, are biggest “issue” is team building and that is what discussion is all about…we’re able to express opinions and work as a team to come to a conclusion and find a solution. I guess this kind of goes with what Dermot was saying. But that’s my take on things. 🙂 -
