MemberI’m working on a new theme that includes the sidebar, and other than a few minor tweaks, it’s working great — everywhere except in Google Chrome — and even then, only on non-topic pages (forum lists, etc.).
If anyone would care to test the new theme, the link is https://bigblueball.com/forums/index.php?styleid=23
Note that some of the content in the sidebar must be replaced (the category list and the poll). If you have ideas on what to include on the sidebar, please share!
And if you have Chrome, give it a try and you’ll see the problem — the forum menu gets “pushed” off to the right side of the screen. Again, this only occurs on pages that aren’t discussions. (like the forum home). Let me know if you’ve got any bright ideas to solve.
Oh yeah, to set your forum theme back to the full width, here’s the link:

ParticipantChrome is the least forgiving in terms of HTML & CSS errors. Have you run the pages thru HTML and CSS validators?
If anyone has IE8 you might try and see if it’s showing in compatibility mode. My understanding is IE8 is also less forgiving of errors but that compatibility mode helps to smooth things over for pages that won’t render as expected.

MemberI’m missing a closing tag somewhere, but I’m not sure where. If I add it at the end, it screws up the 7px border around (the wrap2 div). Ugh!

ParticipantJeff can you send me just the html for one of the pages? When I copy source on the main forum page I’m getting 78 errors and 41 warnings and that’s a huge amount. (That’s to make it totally HTML compliant).
It would be far easier to work with something with less HTML. Can you send a copy of whatever you think has the missing div tag? I’ll find it if you can.
If not – I can work from a regular forum page. Let me know if you have something smaller I can work with.

ParticipantLook somewhere around line 68 for div id “wrap2”. That’s actually the div I think that needs to close. Look at approx line 80 div id “header” and insert the closing div on the line above that line.
Those line items may not be spot on since I was looking at code for a page itself but the div id’s should get you to the right spots.
I added the div in my html editor and it seemed to fix it – but again you’ll want to be sure it doesn’t break something else.

Memberwrap2 is the div that puts the 7px border all they way around the page. It *should* be the last div to close.
The bitch about this is that everything is broken into a hundred templates, so you a div often opens in one template and closes in another. Very tough to track down.

MemberOk, I added the closing for wrap2 (it is the closing div for the whole page). The page renders exactly the same, so that ain’t the problem. :S

ParticipantI see “wrap” in the css sheet that’s incorporated but not “wrap2” so it must be pulling attributes from something else as you said. I’m afraid that’s all I could find that was related to div tags according the the HTML validator on W3.
Hope you find it – HTML can indeed be a bitch!

ParticipantWell if you get inspired the W3 Validator is very good, but if you’ve got stuff crossing pages it will be hard to find.

MemberYes, I’ve used the W3 Validator, but it visits the page as a “guest” and would not see the alternate style.
I’ve narrowed it down to the breadcrumb class.

If I remove the text class=”breadcrumb”, it WORKS — but the formatting of the breadcrumbs is lost. So there must be a conflict between the settings in the breadcrumb class. Now that I know where the problem lies, a solution won’t be far off. 🙂March 17, 2009 at 4:42 am #173911Fanatic
