I’ve been getting a lot of messages from people who are seeing some very strange behavior after upgrading to Yahoo! Messenger 5.0. The symptom is a nuisance: you may see that when you chat with someone, another person’s name shows up instead of yours!
First, the good news (sort of). The person you’re chatting with sees your “real” Yahoo nickname. Only you see the “wrong” name (leading some people to think they’re going crazy!).
So how do you fix it? I can’t say for sure, but if you experience this problem, try editing your Yahoo nickname. Go to “Login/Edit My Contact Info…” and enter the name you want to see in the nickname field. Note that others will also see that name, so edit accordingly.

It looks like it’s a fix, though it may take more than one try before it “takes”. This is probably due to how Yahoo stores information on their servers. It may not be getting updated or synchronized across all their servers in a timely manner.

At first, all the fields are blank, and this is acceptable, the first time you insert information into any of those fields, you can no longer leave the name fields blank, at least one of them must contain info, and this is what you will be known as.
To make things right, in one of the name fields simply enter your nickname or ID.
It should be noted that the nickname in this box is NOT the same as the profile nickname. The nickname in this box is only seen by you, and anyone you choose to send your contact info to (you right click their ID and select, send my contact info, it saves them typing your details in their messenger); The nickname you set in the profile will be seen by all chat users using the YMSG protocols (messenger,chat2.0).
The user online notification: You sometimes get their aliases instead of their main ID, even though you have never spoken to or added them under their alias. I often get this too.
File transfer, to serve files to others, Yahoo! programs need server rights in your firewall on PORT 80, HTTP. If you change the port, you will of course have to change the ports in your firewall. Not sure if Yahoo! Messenger handles the file transfer directly, or one of the other modules such as Y!Server, look in firewall logs for programs being denied.
If you don’t have a firewall, check login>>preferences, connection and make sure its on no proxies, or no network detection. -
