My doubt is that:
If u apply a proxy address in a browser ( IE / NN / Opera) then will the IP address be hidden for all the sites we browse or will it apply for all the Internet applications that we use.
Lemme me more elobarative:
I use IE and use a proxy …… and visit http://abcd.com
and the request sent to the “abcd” will contain the proxy IP address ..
Fine thts great and i am secure..But when i use Yahoo msgr, or an mIRC, then will the same proxy apply or the same IP address assignes by the ISP be applied ???
Please give me a detailed answer about this coz , i want to know the complete implementation details of PROXY server ..
Would appreciate if u can also explain how a proxy works ..

Qt :Great services are not canceled by one act or by one single error.I think I understand what your asking. (too much detail can be confusing) But if your asking does everything use the proxys IP that you use for EI. Then I dont think so, messenger programs are just that a different program then EI. But hang tight Im sure one of these PC geeks will know more then myself.
As far as I know you would have to reroute each different program through a proxy. Otherwise they will still “directly connect”. I don’t know about mIRC, but you can set Y! messenger to go through a web proxy. (under Login/Preferences/Connection)
See I was right on both accounts. Right about Y! Mess using the actual IP and about one of our PC geeks coming thru. *winks* TY Lurking
As much i understand your question.Only the IP of your proxy is going to be register on that site or whereever you go.

so to conclude ::
if the proxy is given in the IE (browser) then it wont protect your entire system.
The vulnerabilities still exist.
If u connect by any means other than ur browser .. ur IP is visible to the world.
So using a firewall is the only way u can protect ur system .thanks friends
TigerThere are other ways to block your system from attacks like the use of a router or a hard firewall before your computer theses are extreme measures for the normal internet users as they are not cheap . if you use a proxy for IE and also for messanger run the proxy thru it your Ip wount be visable. but most hackers and scriptkiddes scan large numbers of Ip addresses if they find a vunerable system it mostly by chance .
Just to clarify:
Unless you are on a network going through another PC which implements a proxy/firewall/router your IP will be released.
If you set up a proxy address in Internet Explorer, your IP maybe hidden from websites you visit – I say maybe, because the proxy can set another header which tells the website which IP its forwarding for, meaning your IP still is shown.
If you connect to Java Chat through Internet Explorer, your IP will still be set in the client because of the diff port/server it uses I think.
You can set a proxy in Yahoo! Messenger:
HTTP proxy – use standard HTTP proxy for Yahoo! Messenger, features will be missing, it’s slow, and I don’t recommend it – but Free ones do exist.
SOCKS proxy – much better, are anonymous, don’t limit features as far as I am aware – but Free ones don’t work, never found one, and it’s not worth the $30 a month to do one.
Proxies used for IE dont’ work for Yahoo unless you set it for the chat client in the connection options. And you can use Java chat under an anonymous proxy to hide your IP address, you just have to set it for that port, which you can do in the IE options, under connections. You can set it for multiple ports, not just one. 😀
