Has anyone else here tried QQ ?
I just installed it. LOOKS very nice (a kind of souped-up or souped-down ICQ, I think) but I’m surprised to find it allocates me # 1242876, AND it says there are “269” users online at present. Is THIS the world-shattering IM program I was expecting ?!
(Hmmm, almost all those online appear to be South African – it’s almost noon Saturday morning in China right now, so where are the millions! of Chinese who use this thing ?)Anyway, anyone who’d like to help me try out the audio, video, etc – let me know!
February 5, 2006 at 10:30 pm #137862Eagle_KiwiMemberHMMMMPH! No one ELSE responded, so I guess *I* gotta!
It seems that version (4.8MB) is some kind of purely South African one ? Others such as me CAN use it, but it seems limited (I couldn’t figure any way to get voice working – and very limited number of users anyway)
But seems the “real” QQ is 11.6MB, but hard to get in English. Though there IS an English version of the program, most download sites are in Chinese. The “best”-looking one I tried was xinhuanet but after 6 tries I gave up as the download kept aborting at around 3MB.
Then…. I found THIS little gem of a site! Not put off by seeing it’s registered in “Sao Tome & Principe” – I downloaded QQQ English version easily.
But… then….. one must Register (of course)… and the QQ Registration page is in… Chinese!
BUT… qq.bur.st has very thoughtfully provided a page explaining step by step how an English speaker can register on this page.Omigosh…. Am I up to it ? I dunno <>
WHAT A LAUGH!!! Poor wonderful helpful Browny is pushing water uphill! Read This!
………… (to be continued)…………….(or maybe quietly “dropped”!? 😉 )..
February 6, 2006 at 1:55 am #137859MrEggsaladParticipantUgh…I have gone and tried to do this. This time at night (only about 8:53 PM, but I’ve had a long day) I am to tired to go extra long distances for this. I also couldn’t get the chinese writer thingy, so I couldn’t register. I have the installer, just no number.
February 6, 2006 at 3:40 am #137863Eagle_KiwiMemberHeyyyy, I’m IN ! QQ#342324276 – and currently I see 12.3 MILLION online!!
Luckily I have Chinese friends who can help me (and they are astonished that they can communicate with anyone outside China on “their” QQ 😉 )Egg, I suggest bypass the “Chinese writing” stuff etc… email the “volcano” guy mentioned on the qq.bur.st site – he indeed emailed me a number and password to get me in … though now I’m getting TRUSTED Chinese friend to help me change password for some real security.
But it is still uphill work. Though the actual program is “English Version”, most/many functions link to websites.. all in Chinese.
NOT recommended for any but the most foolhardy non-Chinese speakers. 🙁 😉
February 6, 2006 at 9:20 pm #137860MrEggsaladParticipantYAY!! I’m using Google’s translator to do the registration page, and I’m currently downloading the Chinese writer thingy. So, from what I am doing, I think pretty soon I will have a QQ #! Will just edit this post to tell more later on.
EDIT::: Also tried translating on PSP but it was very confusing, I just decided to have volcano register me. Haven’t gotten the # yet

Finally managed to signup on QQ with my friend’s help. QQ# 455317966 here.Just happened to see the tabs. Everything’s in Chinese :(. Not much of exploration till now. shall post laters
February 7, 2006 at 10:46 am #137864Eagle_KiwiMemberWell hi Narayanan. I’ll try to hook up with you !
But…. r u sure there should be 10 digits in your QQ# ? (Mine, coupla days ago, was only 9: QQ#342,324,276)

Ok, I found that method was SO simple… then easy to reset “his” given password yourself (Menu – Personal Settings – Network Security) then you’re on your own !(I’ve emailed Mr.Volcano back to thank him, AND invited him to add me for a chat etc… but no response so far. Weirdly beautiful, a totally anonymous Good Samaritan like that! 😉 )
February 7, 2006 at 8:02 pm #137858narayananMemberOops there was a 1 extra, the QQ# is 455317966
February 8, 2006 at 9:04 am #137866Eagle_KiwiMemberOk Narayanan, I C U on QQ now (I find a search by # usually works, but search by nickname NEVER does).
However, each time I try to ADD you, it times out (then I think locks me out after 2 or 3 tries). Maybe u can add me ?
Maybe…. it doesn’t matter anyway .February 8, 2006 at 9:20 pm #137861MrEggsaladParticipantOK! YAY! I got my #. It’s 624109014. So have a chat with me sometime! I will have added, or am adding right now, you guys.
February 10, 2006 at 3:50 pm #137867Eagle_KiwiMemberNarayanan, I’ve tried a number of times to ADD you, but it always seems to give error. Oh well….. ?
At least I have Egg on my face… um, er, oops…. on my List. 😉 ?BTW, I spoke at length with a friend in Beijing tonight. Firstly, the audio was about the same astonishing quality as Skype, which is clearly even better than YM, MSN, or others I’ve tried.
Like Skype it is handsfree, and though we were both using PC speakers there was NO feedback :-). Video was quite good too.
I believe it is only for 1-on-1, and does not handle conferencing. My friend says that TenCent, the company behind QQ, has risen rapidly to become China’s #2 telecommunication company.
(I notice within the 11MB QQ download is also a not-too-bad-at-all TenCent Browser and also a standalone email program – not that I want either).February 15, 2006 at 5:45 am #137869gshapiroParticipantOk, I was able to get a QQ number and now I am looking for the english software. I’d prefer a Mac OS X version (or Java, which the Mac can run) but I am willing to try out a Windows app as well. Alternateively, has anyone found an english web version?
February 15, 2006 at 5:56 am #137868Eagle_KiwiMemberWelcome, GS 🙂
There’s a link in my Post #2 in this thread to a site where the “English” version can be downloaded from (11MB!).
But though that actual software is in English, every second thing you click takes to to a webpage, all of which are total Chinese. As far as I know there’s NO English set of webpages.Though there IS the South African version of QQ – website and program all fairly simple, and all English. (I think that download is about 4MB).
BUT – while the S.Af. one is probably the genuine “program”, its (relatively small) user base is NOT the same as the “main” program – i.e. a user on Chinese version will never see a user on the S.Af. version.
That’s how I figure it anyway.March 21, 2008 at 3:30 pm #137870iridiumcaoMemberI find Eagle_Kiwi has a strong passion on QQ,,,
I will add you later.QQ S.AF is separate from QQ China, they cannot talk to each other.
QQ for Mac can be download from httpim_qq_com/qq/mac/ (please remove the angle brackets and replace the underlines by dots, coz I cannot post URLs at current), but it’s Chinese version only.Sorry that I reply a 2006-wrote post, I just took a search with “QQ”.
