I actually saw this first over at GetGamer, but I thought I’d post it here. The iPod Touch and the iPhone have OpenGL 3D capability built-in, and one of the third party developers has put together a nice demo of Quake 3 on the iPod Touch.
That’s very cool! I can’t wait for Apple to update the firmware to officially support third-party apps.
Although Quake 3 is technically more impressive, I’ve always considered the original Doom as the de facto game to port to everything. For example: Doom became available on DOS, Windows, Linux, OS/2, Amiga, Atari Jaguar, Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, even Gameboy Advance. Then there’s the source ports making Doom also available on platforms like the Nintendo DS, the older iPod models and even digital cameras. Hell, I can even play Doom on my toaster.
So you see, I don’t really care as long as I can at least play Doom on my iPod touch. Except… I don’t have a touch. But that’s ok. Maybe sometime in the future.
Just wait a year or two and they’ll be giving them away in cereal boxes! :p
