A few days ago a program got submitted into the Submit Your Favorite Yahoo! Program thread. I for one have no idea what it does and am confused whether to keep it or not. I tried to download it to test it out but am at a loss. I also tried e-mailing but his e-mail is not shown. So once again i’m asking help from the wonderful staff that knows about Yahoo!, does anyone know anything on this program and whether i should leave it there or not?
March 18, 2006 at 9:49 am #140368Eagle_KiwiMemberI’ve never heard of it or about it, but I really don’t follow “3rd-party” programs much.
But ANYWAY, I’m highly wary of any such thing where (A) I don’t “know” the poster, and/or (B) there is no description or background given – just simply a LINK – and what’s more, a link direct to a download !?!
Surely a link to some sort of source page (like this) would allow user to inspect a little bit before jumping in..I generally trust sourceforge.net stuff, but not sufficiently to feel happy with something just because it comes via there.
I notice further that this Sinbad guy posts the same link in TWO topics – often a bad sign! My inclination would be just a public post in response, ASKING him to include a bit more background etc – like, obviously, has HE ever used this gizmo… does HE like it (and… hmmmm… is HE by chance the Sales Manager for it ?!!! 😉 )
March 18, 2006 at 8:27 pm #140365NessaParticipantI think i’ll delete it from the Submit Your Favorite Program Thread and just leave it in the other post and asks him there if he can explain about it. If he explains i’ll re-add it, if he doesn’t i’ll just leave it deleted. How about that?
EDIT: Here is the thread where i ask for information.
March 18, 2006 at 8:38 pm #140369Eagle_KiwiMemberI guess that sounds reasonable.
Your link above no longer works (maybe post already deleted?) – so I can’t easily go check what “rules” there are for “Submit Your Fav Prog”, but I feel the guy probably DID indeed submit his favorite, so maybe a bit harsh to take it out.
But gee, I DO think it reasonable that any submission should have SOME sort of description…. yeah, I’d agree delete it.I guess he may never be back anyway – we’ll see !
March 18, 2006 at 8:44 pm #140366NessaParticipantYes, it’s been temporarily deleted but it’s exactly the same exact one as posted on the other thread. I’d leave it, but not even i could figure out how to use it and leaving it there would make other people ask questions on how to use it also, which is why i rather include all information for each download, so for now i think it’s better deleted until i get more information on it.
March 18, 2006 at 10:06 pm #140362Jeff HesterKeymasterVanessa, I looked at the file and it appears to be legitimate and “safe.” Most projects accepted by Sourceforge (as this one is) are going to be ok.
What it does is let you send ASCII art via Yahoo IMs. Not sure what ASCII art is? Check out http://www.chris.com/ascii/
March 18, 2006 at 10:13 pm #140363DavidParticipantThe source for that project is 100% safe. It uses basic API calls to find the IMClass window for Y!IM, and it writes to the filesystem under ./smiles/, there is no harm or risk in any of that.
March 18, 2006 at 10:16 pm #140367NessaParticipantAlright, thanks for the information, shall go ahead and undelete.
March 21, 2006 at 5:05 am #140370Eagle_KiwiMemberFair enough, since the experts have analysed this thing.
But whether IT is “safe” or not, I don’t believe such things should be made available with such lack of description or background.
(And I still wonder who/what this mysterious “Sinbad” might be – I’m always suspicious of anyone who joins a forum like this seemingly only to post a link to a program, especially a little known or unknown program.
Perhaps different if that was posted by a more established BBB member.)March 31, 2006 at 9:57 pm #140364NettiMemberOk… Ascii art is actually something we use to do back in the first days of yahoo. You make a picture out of letters of a heart, or a guy giving the finger, and the picture is made only from characters or symbols, etc.
There was a lot of programs back that then you could click on the word Heart, and copy and paste it into the room, and it would show up as a giant heart.
To get a better understanding of what it is..
Check out this site.

Ok Well you get the idea.
Anyway that’s what this program is.
