KeymasterI aint an expert but heres my two cents .
No program is foolproof or reliable , look at windows and you pay for it!!
Start having faith in people – if she is a good friend and your both honest then she has no reason to say otherwise
if however you are annoying her then thats a different matter just cause somones online dont mean they have to talk to you or tell you its called privacy.
Just accept what she says and move on.

MemberI’ve heard some of these programs report falsely, saying someone is always online. Not sure though, I never use them.

KeymasterTender,
First off I’d like to say I agree with Alley, Just because they are online doesn’t mean they aren’t working or doing something where they can’t chat right now. That is generally why people are invisible . You must also consider if “your friend” has a family ( ie, husband kids etc) then maybe she is invisible because they are using the computer. My kids use mine on my screen but I have it set where my yahoo is invisible. Or maybe your friend is on looking up information. Point being, there IS a reason she is invisible.
Secondly, having said that , you could always invite them to a voice chat if you really want to know if they are invisible, If they are online you won’t get a reply if they are ” hiding ” or they will ” decline”. If they are not online you will get a reply that the user you invited is not online.
Keep in mind by doing so you run the risk of them blocking you for good. Once you explain why you are inviting them or if they get too annoyed by you. Your choice.

ParticipantI tested that program out with a few IDs that I was sure of the status of, it seemed to work pretty good every time for me…no false positives. But I don’t really like the idea behind it…. why would you want to talk to someone that doesn’t want to talk to you? Nothing annoys me more than getting an IM from somebody when I am invisible, “HEY I know you’re on, talk to me!!!!” If I wanted to talk to you right now would I be invisible??:(
