I have someone writing me. He seems to know my status too at all times.. can anyone tell me how he did this? I always have mine so I have to approve them to be on their list..HELP!! ( oh, and thanks in advance)
August 8, 2004 at 2:18 am #74810amy_d_gParticipantWhen you say he knows your status, do you mean he knows if you are online or not, or does he know if you have another status message up, like away or not at my desk, etc? There are online status checkers that will tell you if someone is online (even invisible)… My advice is put him on your ignore list if you don’t want to talk to him, and check out the Deny A Buddy Program… theres posts about it somewhere, not sure as I have never used it…
August 8, 2004 at 2:57 am #74801Jeff HesterKeymasterIn reality Tender, the status checkers simply tell you if someone is invisible or not. This friend of yours may be on your list under a different name.
If he is only telling when you are online, He could tell that by going to yahoo mail, or if you play yahoo games it shows you are online. If he is actually seeing what your status says ie ” catch me later , busy ” etc .. Then Like I said more than likely he is on your list under another alias .
My best advice would be to use stealth mode on him. Or completely block him. If he is on your list as another id there are ways to trick him into revealing himself . When I say trick all it involves is using stealth mode and common sense.
August 8, 2004 at 3:25 am #74803OreoMemberThere are LOTS of posts and a wealth of knowledge on this subject on the site. Use the search button in the upper right of the screen, limit the search to just this forum. I’m not giving you any tips in this posts b/c there are LOTS of ways to deal with this and you will find them by searching. Good luck and let us know if any work.
August 8, 2004 at 4:26 am #74808untamedkreationMemberThere are ways of someone adding your id to their list without you knowing / permitting. Alot of the booter’s people use can add your ID to their list
August 8, 2004 at 1:00 pm #74812TommygatorMemberI don’t think he needs to be on your buddy list to tell, he could (or anyone could) add any name to the yahoo mail address book, and when you click show addresses it shows a nice list and status ( online or off) of all the people. simple enough your just a copy and paste away from joining you in chat or whatever
Edit: Removed bold tags. Please only use bold to dennote important words, phrases or quotes. Thanks for understanding.
August 8, 2004 at 1:59 pm #74804OreoMemberActually, Yahoo! have changed the exploit on being able to add people, had you looked at the search area like I suggested to tenderheart you would see that. Tommy, welcome to BBB. Also, if you look in past topic you’ll see why that’s not the most reliable way to tell. The address book only works SOMETIMES. If someone has turned off their status…then it doesn’t work.
August 8, 2004 at 4:02 pm #74802Jeff HesterKeymasterActually OREO when I posted that I had no idea they had changed that, had you actually read what I had typed you would have probably figured it out had you bothered to read what I had typed.
Secondly I do not appreciate your childish and rude remarks tyvm.
August 8, 2004 at 4:15 pm #74805OreoMemberI don’t believe my remarks were rude OR childish, but I have offended you and for that I apologize. And was not even addressing you…I was addressing another post, keep reading in the thread and you’ll see that. And the exploit has been changed for quite some time now. I’m sorry you were not already aware of that, no one here was attacking you or anyone.
August 9, 2004 at 12:42 am #74809untamedkreationMemberIn comment to this: “Actually, Yahoo! have changed the exploit on being able to add people.” That is incorrect. I have the code that does it and no it hasn’t been patched. I am a VB Programmer and for the past month been working on a hopefully secure messenger clone ( for purposes of trying to stop the nonstop boots from children.) But anyways one of the sources I found belonged to a booter and I have tested the code on myself using several other ID’s and the exploit still works. Sometimes it does send a add buddy request and no matter if you allow it or deny it will add the name. Other times it will add the name and the add buddy never appears. Also before someone claims that well its prolly cause your on the same computer, no this is using seperate computers on separate connections. But in agreement with what was said about using stealth. I’d agree use stealth to block your name from being seen by the user, or search around for programs to remove your name from his list and add him to your ignore list
August 9, 2004 at 1:26 am #74806OreoMemberThen they’ve found a new exploit, that’s good to know. Thanks for the info. and sorry Untamed about thinking they had them addressed, last I had heard they were (and that wasn’t too long ago).
August 9, 2004 at 9:00 am #74813TwistoffateMemberUntammed,
When you speak of the security leak, do you mean the one has never been fixed or they created a new one?
August 10, 2004 at 4:23 pm #74811tenderheart5MemberThanks all.. NO, he actually KNEW my status!! I put clever messages up and he knew them.. so, I asked him to stop..that I didnt appreciate his sneaky ways and then blocked him.. NOW, I wonder how many more are out there!! YIKES!!! Thanks again all Shari
August 10, 2004 at 6:10 pm #74807OreoMemberI’m happy you finally solved your problem. ANOTHER thing you can do in addition to blocking him is use one of the deny-a-buddy programs out there and remove YOUR ID from his PC. Trolling around has a good one and as Yahoo! changes their systems these programs have to update, so they may be short lapses where they don’t work. I’ll give a link here that will go to some back posts on the site and give you some more info on this. https://bigblueball.com/forums/search.asp?mode=DoIt&Search=Deny-a-Buddy&andor=1&Forum=26&SearchMessage=0&SearchDate=0&SearchMember= Hope this helps 🙂
May 14, 2005 at 9:35 am #74815DobrinMemberSo is there now a way to add people to your buddy list without they know or not ?
Because the previous posts are very old, have yahoo patched this weakness ? -
