How important does a person have to be before they are considered assassinated instead of just murdered?
Why do you have to “put your two cents in”.. but it’s only a “penny for your thoughts”? Where’s that extra penny going to?
Once you’re in heaven, do you get stuck wearing the clothes you were buried in for eternity?
Why does a round pizza come in a square box?
What disease did cured ham actually have?
How is it that we put man on the moon before we figured out it would be a good idea to put wheels on luggage?
Why is it that people say they “slept like a baby” when babies wake up like every two hours?
If a deaf person has to go to court, is it still called a hearing?
Why are you IN a movie, but you’re ON TV?
Why do people pay to go up tall buildings and then put money in binoculars to look at things on the ground?

MemberYes, just why did they put a man on the moon before putting wheels on suitcases?
Perhaps they thought that Buzz and Neil wouldn’t need wheels because luggage would just float around due to the weightlessness anyway!

ParticipantThis is a great reminder of how much idioms are a part of our life . . . that things like “slept like a baby” are just a part of the language when obviously it doesn’t make sense. Neither does “slept like a log” – inanimate objects can’t sleep. And other languages have their own idioms that are just as random . . . Greeks apparently “sleep like a bird.” I have a bird . . . sleeping isn’t something peaceful for him.
To answer a few of the questions though . . . Yes, you can cry underwater; and, in heaven you won’t be wearing your earthly clothes . . . it’s a totally different existence.
But reading this and other Gigglepedia observations . . . it just hit me that the language is really at the root of many of these silly-isms. I’m glad we can capture and enjoy them. Thanks, Shrek!

Participant> Why does a round pizza come in a square box?
Look at the construction of the box, the sides are folded up. How would you do that with a round box? It would be a more complicated design, and would most likely require either a) more space to store/transport, or b) more assembly time, and/or c) more complicated assembly (more time/materials).
As with the wheels on the luggage, I think that this is a late-20th century way of life, seeing as air travel didn’t really take off (pun not intended) until more recently. Travel back then would have included less time that one would be carrying their suitcase. But now with the advent of large airports, connecting flights and the commercialization of air travel, the wheels have become something that people want, and are willing to pay more for, since it is a convenience that actually serves a real purpose.
Quote:To answer a few of the questions though . . . Yes, you can cry underwater;Actually I’m pretty sure this would depend on the depth. At a certain point, the pressure from the surrounding water is going to be too much for for the tears to move out of the tear duct. At the level of pressure, I don’t know how the rest of the body would react though.

ParticipantDavid – good observations there! Actually, our pizzas are now being put in octagonal boxes which fit a bit better and don’t cause quite the big mess if the pizza gets thrown against a side.
Wheels on luggage . . . we also carry lots more stuff now than we used to so gotta have wheels and handles or risk injury.
Interesting point on the tears. I hadn’t considered depth. But I’ve seen it done in regular pools.
And about heaven . . . that’s an answer. 😀

Yeah I’ve seen those octagonal boxes, I’m not sure what the purpose is other than preventing it from sliding around (although I suppose thats a good purpose on its own)
Do we really carry more stuff though? I know when I fly, I have my backpack with the laptop and some other stuff in it, and a bag with clothes (checked). Having a carry-on personal bag isn’t old (as far as I know). I think the reason is still just that we use air travel more. (Why would you need a bag with wheels for a road trip?)

When I was at the top of the empire state building me and my best mate did that. Oh yes. 😉 Then we wondered if it was true that if we threw over a dime it would kill a person at the bottom, but we never did. Promise! 😮
Ps sent this around my pals at work today. It was enjoyed. Thanks Shrek!

Lots of other electronics (phones, games, iPods, hairdryers) wouldn’t have been packed either. And I know my parents didn’t pack nearly as much to travel as I do in terms of clothes and shoes and stuff; and believe it or not . . . I’m a fairly light packer. And the only reason for a carry-on these days is so you have a change of clothes with you because you know your luggage is gonna get lost en route at some point during your trip.
