As has been discussed in this thread, I’d like to know what our staff think about including Social Networking into our forums. Your opinions if you will, please. Thank you.
November 7, 2007 at 3:01 pm #165229Doris KenneyParticipantIt’s a natural extension of IM’s and offers so much more.
-Doris-November 7, 2007 at 4:16 pm #165217Jeff HesterKeymasterIM was the precursor to social networks. I say YES!
November 7, 2007 at 6:54 pm #165223PolarBearNPRParticipantUmm . . . isn’t IM sort of a springboard to networking? I’ve got one friend that has led me to expand my list exponentially – guess he’s the social-networking-guru (silly new zealander). 😉
November 7, 2007 at 10:50 pm #165228Doris KenneyParticipantI wonder who that might be….
🙂November 12, 2007 at 12:59 am #165222MrOatsMemberI voted: YES. …! 😉
November 12, 2007 at 1:23 am #165224PhilipModeratorAs I’ve said, I know very little about the social networking concept, so we’d probably need a staff or two to volunteer to set up the social networking forum. Any thoughts, comments, suggestions, etc. would be welcome.
November 12, 2007 at 8:30 am #165219DavidParticipantHow would this even work? A forum to talk about Facebook, Myspace and Twitter? I don’t see any target audience there, since those people would use their respective service to discuss anything related..
November 12, 2007 at 8:47 am #165218Jeff HesterKeymasterDavid, it’s hard to know how or if it would work until we try it. Yes, for people USING MySpace, they would likely just “use MySpace” to discuss issues about MySpace. But there may be value in providing context at a higher level — sort of like meta data on the various social networks.
Covering the social network topic is not without precedent. There is a very popular blog — Mashable — that is dedicated to nothing but coverage of the social network scene. There are also thousands of sites that support MySpace by providing graphics, CSS code and widgets.
Besides, where do you go to learn about Twitter for the first time? Or Jaiku? Or fill-in-the-blank? Unless you hear from a friend… and then even if you do, where do you go for a second, objective opinion (is THIS network worth my time?).
One of the things to consider is what audience we want to go after? The end users or the “movers and shakers” in the industry?

YM users might search Yahoo. Ditto for AIM, ICQ, Trillian, etc. But I’m sure a lot of them come to our forums for help and whatever, too. That’s why BBB exists.

December 1, 2007 at 11:33 pm #165220StigmataMemberI frequently use Myspace, Facebook and occasionally bebo.
Would be happy to help with general queries, writing FAQs, and profile hacks etc 🙂
Think this will go ahead?
December 3, 2007 at 10:39 am #165227PhilipModeratorHey James, glad to see you back and posting. Thanks for volunteering for the Social Networking thing…hopefully that will take off soon.
