MemberI would like to re-write this in C, PERL, or PHP, ( I have not decided which yet) , Would you be willing to give me your souce code or some initial information on protocal or how you are doing this? My solutions will be open source and GPL, are yours?
Thanks!

MemberOnline Status Indicator is not open source. Some of these features are very difficult (or impossible) to implement in C, Perl or PHP. Also, there is no real need for a rewrite, Online Status Indicator runs on all platforms.

MemberThanks for your answer, even though I didn’t like it.
I have already written the PHP, and PERL versions, in only 2 days, and they are both WAY faster.
Very difficult (or impossible) ? Come on, JAVA is far from being superior…
No need for a re-write? Oh you mean besides the fact that its written in JAVA and is not open source, its slow, and it requires support in the browser.
Don’t mean to be rude, your answer just seemed arrogant and selfish, its not like you are selling it or anything…
Maybe you can answer this, about how many ‘clients’ does each of your servers support with a decent response time for each?

MemberI`ve written 1 in less then 30seconds !!!
for online status
for offline status[ontopic]
Why did you even bother asking for the source if you can re-write it yourself in 2 days ?
{snip}

{/snip}You should ask microsoft to send a copy of there Windows 2000 or XP source to your hotmail account.
What`s wrong with “not” being open source ? He build/wrote it, its his work, and if he doesn`t want to share the source SO BE IT !
Oh yeah right java is slow bla bla and Sun builds bad servers right ?
– Java is able communicate in every wich way and can keep connections OPEN. PHP can`t because the thread just stops at the end.
– Java is slow… osi doesn`t need any kind of gui, it functions as a daemon and uses childs that are less then 1k !
– It requires support in the browser ?!?… we aren`t talking about “javascripting” here. Osi generates its own html page(s) and can be fully customized. It isn`t depending on any webserver and its easy to recover with cronjobs.
So you`ve written it in php in 2 days, and its much faster then osi also ?Msn:
Connecting to a messenger server (4/5 seconds to get a full connection). Send the request (1/2) seconds. Get a responce from the server (1/2) seconds. and show the correct status.
ICQ:
You just ripped the string that`s on the icq page.
AIM:
See the msn part.
Yahoo same thing.
YOU ARE COOL !

MemberLet me clarify there hot stick,,,

You should ask microsoft to send a copy of there Windows 2000 or XP source to your hotmail account.Heh, ya, except Microsoft is a giant evil entity, bent on world domination, that charges MONEY for all of its software. It has millions of hotmail users, and would take a question like that as a threat to security. This guy ob the other hand, gives his software away, doesn’t charge a dime, but keeps the source closed??? Is the code ugly or what? What’s wrong with not being open source? Well if the author gets hit by a truck tommarow, all of this software dies and no-one can continue to develop it.

– Java is able communicate in every wich way and can keep connections OPEN. PHP can`t because the thread just stops at the end.Yes, JAVA is slow and sucks ( MY OPINION ). No Sun does not make crappy servers, keeping the connection up even when there is not queries is a waste, and php is able to keep the connection until it gets the info it needs, and then it drops it.

If the demo doesn’t display, you need to Get Java Now!
you never even touched on my comment about the browser. YOUR BROWSER FOR VIEWING THE THING MUST HAVE JAVA SUPPORT. I NEVER SAID ANYTHING ABOUT SERVER SOFTWARE OR CROSS PLATFORM ISSUES, OR ASKED IF IT WAS ‘CUSTOMIZED’. Read and think before you respond.I have written the msn part, the icq part is just the online status string from icq’s site, yea why do it any other way? Yahoo, same thing, from their site, no use writing something complicated for that. AIM, Jabber, ect , ya they are all working, yippee.
But its not like you need to worry or get mad at me, YOUR NOT SELLING ANY PRODUCT, I AM NOT TRYING TO COMPETE.

Heh, ya, except Microsoft is a giant evil… Bla Bla Bla….– You should stop using windows then, dont use msn messenger anymore, dont use hotmail and move your site from a windows to a unix host.
Quote:quote:
Yes, JAVA is slow and sucks ass.– Sure, you are so totally right. Here have it your way.
Quote:quote:
Keeping the connection up even when there is not queries is a waste,– Sure just close the connection, then what ? the process dies (TTL !!!) and you need to reconnect again. (7 seconds further…Zzzz), but you already know that.
Quote:quote:
and php is able to keep the connection just as long as necessary.– Yeah just loop loop loop, send lots of requests to the server and hope to get response back (Waste of queries / connections ? neh !)
Quote:quote:
SMARTASS, in your little… // Read and think before you respond.– You should read the line again to see what my point is.
Quote:quote:
But its not like you need to worry…You sure act like you are try to “win” here, I am just making my point here. If you had the ability to think you would know that php isn`t the _platform_ to use.
And don’t even worry about working WITH me, I wouldn`t even hire you even if it was free. Your ideas are based on nothing then more then pure crap, same thing for the scripts on your website.

MemberBTW: I have put mine up on my site. It is on an external server running on a slow connection, and its still fast.
Mine does not just show if you are online/offline for msn, it actually gets your status, so it shows BUSY, or AWAY, ect, as well.
December 10, 2002 at 7:00 pm #65822PyroX
MemberIt does not loop ever, it gets status and exits, pure and simple.
Quote:quote:You should stop using windows then, dont use msn messenger anymoreI do not use windows I use Linux, I don’t use msn’s messegner client, I use AMSN ( BECAUSE MY FRIENDS USE MSN, NOT BY MY CHOICE ) .
It takes <1 second for me to connect, not 7 Zzzz …
And your not very nice at all, I never called your product CRAP , I said java is crap.
Do not attack me or my product personally, as I have not done this to you. Unless you own Microsoft or Sun?
My website is ment to aid BEGINNERS, it provides very simplistic code FOR BEGINNERS, so judge not.DON’T BE A DICK

MemberI just noticed that “Geoffrey” is a ‘new member’ , not the code author. I don’t have to care anymore.

MemberSeems that you have been discussing this a lot here. Just some short statements to sum this up.
– OSI can handle a quite large number of clients with a reasonable response time. The bottlenecks are not really in the software, they are in the status server connections and/or bandwidth.
– I had no intention of being arrogant, I was just saying that OSI is not open source.
– Some of the first versions of Java were slow. This is not really the case anymore.
– The demo on http://status.webhop.net/ needs a Java Virtual Machine.
– You don’t need Java installed to use Online Status Indicator from one of the hosts.December 10, 2002 at 11:15 pm #65820PyroX
MemberThank You! You are not so bad.
Good Day,

I only came here in an effort to find out how to write my own status indicators, just for experience, but I can’t stand such incompetence. Do you even know PHP? Or ANY language for that matter? A connection is held to the server until you explicitly close or until it times out, for whatever reason that may be. If it had to reconnect each time, forum software such as vBulletin and phpBB wouldn’t be anywhere near as sucessful at they are. There is no waste of connections or queries. That’s a pointless and stupid claim.
Just thought I’d chime in 🙂

MemberI will be, sometime in the near future, once the code is perfected.
Right now it works great, but its kind of designed “just for my use”, so I will be making some changes so anyone can use it.I have been too buys to get to work on any of my hobby projects latley. But soon I may get a chance.
Thanks for the interest, check back again in a couple weeks. -
