Sorry for the delay but You can go to two different places to change how your name appears on yahoo profiles. the email which does not always work for everyone, but has for me. go into your email and upper left corner choose options, once in options go to general preferences and the name and email section which is the top section change the name in email (from name). or you can try going into your email and center right click your account which is your yahoo account and once in your go to edit Address/Contact Information and change the information to what you want it to be. I hope this has helped you. I tried both just now and they worked for me.
I’m confused as whether you want to do this for a chat room, Yahoo! Messenger or e-mail.
For e-mail do what williamlee said about options in Yahoo! Mail and make sure you push Save, then try e-mailing yourself to see if it worked.
For Yahoo! Messenger go to Preferences>My Contact Details and change the information there to what you want it to say mainly under Nickname since that one will be the one used
For chat rooms i’m not sure on this one but i think changing it on yahoo messenger will change it in chat rooms. (i don’t really know since i don’t use chat rooms but maybe someone else can tell you this one).

ummm strange as I am currently talking to a long time friend who said it changed everytime I changed it this morning. I would give it some time as yahoo sometimes takes a little while to record changes. But other than what I suggested the only other thing I know is to close the account and making a new one. if you like the email addy name and hate to change it try keeping the same name with a minor change like for example if my email was william I could put wwilliam or williamm. anyway i hope you get your problem fixed and sorry if I was no help.
I just thought of something – if your friend has your real name listed on his or hers contact info in their yahoo messenger and their preferences is set to reveal your name it will show up like they have it set but that will only be for them to see they would not see no change on their messenger buddy list. they must make that change themselves.
All Yahoo! Services read from one thing, Your Account Information
go to http://login.yahoo.com
sign in and go to account information
under your name and surname change it
and save it and then when ur in yahoo services or sites it will welcome you by that title
and people adding you will alse get that name.
like is your id is JOE_SOAPxxx
make ur name JOE_
and your surname SOAPxxx
then people adding you will see JOE_SOAPxxx as your id on their lists and address books.
