I am on Win XP, using Windows Messenger with firewall enabled.
I have just learnt how to open some ports (TCP 6891-6900) so now I can send files via Messenger whereas before, I couldn’t.
Problem is – I can send files, but I still can’t receive them. When someone sends me a file and I ‘accept’, the file transfer fails instantly.
Is there something I can do to fix this problem?

To determine whether or not this is the case, simply try disabling the Windows Firewall whilst you attempt to recieve a file. If you can’t recieve the file, then the problem obviously lies elsewhere. However if you can recieve the file, you will have to configure the Windows Firewall to accept incoming files from MSN Messenger.
*EDIT*
Here is a quote from an article I have just read which includes a section on the Windows Firewall.
Quote:quote:Enabling this firewall will stop incoming messages from reaching your computer and the programs running on it. To allow your computer to interact over the network with other computers and programs you must configure the windows firewall properly to accept trusted communications from those computers and programs. Now, i’m not 100% sure if that applies to you, but you can read the full article here:

Also, I gave up with Win Messenger, and installed MSN messenger – which I am now using instead. So I configured my settings – opened a few ports (as instructed on this page – http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/protect/ports.mspx ),
then asked a friend to send me a file. And it worked! But then today on MSN, someone else initiated a file transfer and I received some sort of “time out” error… The transfer failed.
I read somewhere that:
Quote:quote:The TCP ports need to be configured so that sockets on a port remain open for extended periods of time. How do I set this?
