I have a questions isn’t it better to reformatt from the actual discs for xp than it is to use the quick formatt on your computer? And if someone has gained access or compromised your computer, would they still have access if you use the system restore that comes with xp ?
I assume your talking about the hard disk before you reinstall Windows, right? It doesn’t really matter which you choose. A full format is a little safer as far as data recovery is concerned, but it’ll take much longer. The quick format is faster, but won’t actually format over the entire drive. This is all thats really needed for home users.
I’m not totally sure what you mean though, so clarify and I’ll try to help.
hmm, clarify .. Ok I’ll try, What I mean is I have windows xp home edition, when something goes wrong you have the option to roll your computer back to when it was working right or you have the option preform a pc system recovery which will do it from the installations already on your computer.
Now, I have called my manufactorer of my computer and asked them for the original reformatting discs. Which re-installs everything but you actually have to use THE discs.
Suppose someone compromised your system, if you use the restore already installed on your computer is there a chance they could still be on your system?
If you use the discs for windows xp and restore, is it better in helping to get rid of them or keeping them away ?
Or will they have already gotten your main hardrive ip address and either way its useless they will find you . ( this is why I was asking which is better to use just in case you were wondering )

Yes, the program is probably still there, even after System Restore.

Hard-disks don’t have IP addresses, I don’t know what the hell your talking about.
Better than what? huh? I already answered this David , is it better in HELPING or aiding you in getting rid of the person or program that compromised your system?

aside from the fact I think the cursing is inappropriate , what I am talking about is , someone had told me at one time that your hardrive comes with an INTERNAL ip address, and that maybe the person or program that compromised my system was able to get ahold of it .
As I’ve said before I do NOT know all of the computer tems BUT I am trying to explain it to the best of my ability.

What helps if you would explain with the end view your goal. The question you asked (“reformat from discs or quick format?”) doesn’t make much sense.
‘Formatting’ is the process that cleans all contents on a medium (be it a floppy disk or a harddisk). This can be done in practically two ways. Normal and quick. ‘Quick’ only erases the ‘index’ of the medium, so the operating system won’t recognize the files and will overwrite them. ‘Normal’ erases all contents of the drive, from A to Z.
Now, if this wasn’t the answer what you’re looking for, then try to tell us what your end situation (your goal) is supposed to be. Then, we can tell you all the geeky terms for it. 😉
Ok, trying again, If someone sent me a trojan or a file infected with an invisible keylogger , if I use system recovery on my computer, instead of from my discs chances are the trojan will still be on here, if I use the original discs is there a chance the trojan will still be on here?
Or which do you recommend, system restore already on my computer or from the original disks?
And if I use things like Nortons internet security , will that be compromised too from the trojan? Or when I reformatt will it be ok to place that program back on here ?
Wild heres this and im hoping im right here
In theory lets say your computers been compromised by a trojan and in doing so you are left with a few choices… depends on the severity of how you have been compromised you would do this as follows
1) Disable Windows Systems Restore to do that on XP click on this URL
Follow the instructions as follows and keep that url safely add it to favorites
2) Once the Restore has been disbled then it would be in your best interest to download a spyware checker
The two bests ones are Ad-aware and Spybot I haves both because if one doesnt find a file you can usually guarantee the other one has
For Ad-Aware
For Spybot

Once they have been downloaded… Ensure they are updated and run them… Follow the instructions ( oh by the way if you do find any files on Ad aware at the end Ensure all the boxes are checked/ticked so they will be deleted)
Now On Adaware it may say that We needs to reboot before we can delete the rest of the files… This Is why I have got You to disable Systems Restore because sometimes files are usually set in there… and with it disabled it makes it easier for Adaware to delete them instead of them being there time and time again.
3) When Done totally reboot… And Go back to Disable Systems Restore…and Enable it… And Create a New Restore point.. so if anything happens.. You haves a point with No files infected or will be returned to system restore ( thats the theory )
4) However Lets Just say that it is in Restore this infected file and cannot be removed You are now Left with 2 choices
5) One is to totally remove System Restore folder and then Reboot your Xp and then Reinstall the Systems Restore Folder.. this will Remove all the infected files that were in there , then create a new restore point ( Yes this does work as I done it with a hard drive on Win ME ) as to how you do it.. im currently at work and its a bit long winded and you are probably better of getting hold of me if thats your wish for that option
6) If You knows what the trojan ie its name then type that in google and you will more than likely find a program that will eradicate this trojan totally once and for all.
7) If All Else fails and You feels your system has been compromised then you may be better of thinking of a total reformat..
8) If thats Your option then I would suggest you save all Files and Folders that are relevant to you and burn it onto disk and then do a Clean reformat.. so when its done you will have a nice fresh version of Win XP and all you are left to do is Windows updates and install your sotware you use for the computer.

Yes, it helps but I have a few more questions ..
1. When I disable system restore that means when I turn it back on anything I have on my computer at the moment is the point in which it will be restored each time?
2. How would one go about getting ahold of you?
3. I have done this , I have the restore discs ( which I have reformatted many times , I have bought a new computer, switched isp’s , switched out my modems numerous times. Gotten New ip addresses, then I was told he may have gotten an internal ip address from my hardrive ( I do not know if this is true since I dont know if your hardrive has an internal ip address) Yet , this person still finds me , this is why I thought quite possibly it was one of two things he had done, He either sent me something that connects through my yahoo pager ( this would be the only thing I didn’t change) or when I added my old files back on here I re-added the trojan somehow . Either way the minute I am online he finds me and annoys me . Its all connected with when I get online .
4. This was also why I asked an earlier question of can someone track you through yahoo and I don’t mean chat rooms, this person I met in Yahoo games ( which as far as I know is NOT A CHAT ROOM) so he wasn’t following me to chat rooms with ” join user” but to games.
And every time I do a full restore , And redownload other things the only thing I do THE SAME is add my Nortons internet security which at the time he sent me the trojan or hacked me I did NOT have a firewall and I always log into my old ids such as wildatheart . So correct me if Im wrong , he has something on here that is telling him when I’m online , where I am and what I’m saying and doing ( be it visiting a web-page or writing a story ) he knows who I talk to , exactly what I say , when he/she/it gets angry enough at my trying to get rid of them, either they lock down the im’s I’m on of the people trying to help me, they close down email addresses, or I suddenly start getting programs that I always use ” suddenly are missing files ” and I have to restore the program again.

But why exactly are you asking all this? I know now that you are trying to get rid of something on your harddisk or someone online, but I still can’t make the link between the questions you ask and your goal.
Could you tell us what the problem is, so we can work from there? It would be easier than working from a half-solution, while not really knowing what the actual problem or goal is.
