To create a new poll, start a new topic in the appropriate forum, then before you submit, scroll down to the “Additional Options” section. You’ll see an option to “Post a Poll” with the topic. Check the box and select how many poll options you will have, then click submit. You’ll then be asked to compose the poll question and the options.
Your actual topic will show below the poll itself (like this does).
Polls are fun, right?
Agreed, Jeff. Polls are fun (and I’m a sucker for them). However, let me give my 2 cent’s worth about some weaknesses in the BBB Polls:
- A poll can only contain 1 question. I think a poll should be able to contain at least 3 questions or so.
- After initially creating a poll and saving it, I should be able to go back and edit it, provided that no one has voted yet.
- The BBB polls are scattered throughout the forums. There should be an area (in Off Topic, perhaps?) where all the polls are located. In this way, if I have nothing better to do, I can go there and waste my time :p participating in polls.
Look at what these guys are doing here.
May 25, 2007 at 3:21 am #161472Jeff HesterKeymasterPolls can only have one question. It’s a limitation of vBulletin’s poll feature. And apparently a limitation of IPB (which Neowin uses), too, since I couldn’t find any multi-question polls at Neowin.
We can’t make it so that anyone who starts a poll can edit it only if no one has voted. You can either edit it at ANY time or not at all. We CAN set it up so that the entire staff can edit a poll. I won’t go into the obvious reasons why you wouldn’t normally want to edit a poll after voting has begun.
Yes, BBB polls are scattered throughout the forum. If you think it’s worthwhile, we could always setup a “poll” forum. However, this seems to run counter to the other discussion on consolidating forums. Are we consolidating or expanding?
May 25, 2007 at 3:28 am #161474DavidParticipantDidn’t we have a ‘Polls’ section at one time in the past?
May 25, 2007 at 3:52 am #161473detn8rParticipantYes, and it was almost a waste of friggen internet.
“Whats your favorite kind of celery?”
May 25, 2007 at 4:12 am #161476SpikeMemberThe green kind. 🙂
May 25, 2007 at 4:31 am #161482PhilipModeratorJeff, here’s a multi-question poll at Neowin. Graham has a point there about polls being a waste of time; however, polls can be useful if managed properly (we could delete the useless celery poll, couldn’t we? 😉 )
Judging by the popularity of the Polling Station in Neowin, I think we could try setting one up in the Off-Topic area. It gives members something else to respond to, besides the Arcade and the forums. But if the staff are not happy with this, I don’t mind. It’s just a suggestion. Heck, maybe we could poll the staff about this? 🙂
May 25, 2007 at 4:58 am #161477SpikeMemberThat’s not a multi-qutestion poll, it’s just a poll and someone typed out more questions (which, technically, is just questions, not really a “poll”).
May 25, 2007 at 2:57 pm #161481PhilipModeratorWell Spike, it did look like a multi-question poll to me. And we can’t do that kind of thing with our own polls, can we?

You can do that with a poll here too. Just type some questions in the message box when posting it.
If a polls section would boost activity, I’m all for it.

May 25, 2007 at 3:26 pm #161483PhilipModeratorRepeating myself again, but…thanks, Dave!
May 25, 2007 at 8:27 pm #161479MrEggsaladParticipantIPB Supports multiple questions on polls (up to 3). I did a test on my copy of it. 3 Questions, 20 choices per question I think.
May 25, 2007 at 9:05 pm #161478SpikeMemberOh, nevermind then, I was wrong (going from what Jeff said earlier). Maybe there’s a mod that does multi-question polls? Someone wanna do a quick search at vB.org?
May 25, 2007 at 9:19 pm #161480MrEggsaladParticipantI was searching around, couldn’t find anything about multiple question polls..
