The question is… when you are in a relationship and one of the people says “we need to take a break” what does that mean?
February 3, 2006 at 7:19 am #137785TigerbladeParticipantheh, in my experience, “take a break” means just that the person needs some time to themselves to think things through, just to get away from the whole situation and decide what they really want to happen.
February 3, 2006 at 11:25 am #137791Eagle_KiwiMemberI can’t vote for either one … as either could easily apply, depending….. 🙁
I think if said openly and honestly, then it means “time alone”. And that’s hopefully a GOOD thing!
But I fear in some cases that “take a break” is perhaps really saying “I want to back off from YOU so I can get a better balanced view of my relationship with that OTHER person” (so, maybe THAT break will turn out permanent 🙁 )
February 3, 2006 at 4:13 pm #137786lordicarusMemberWell I’m not necessarily saynig thsi applies to me and my current life situation. I was just curious really what everyone thinks… because this is a major topic of debate for me and a number of friends as of late. While this does apply to my situation perfectly, whichever way it is, strangely I’m not unhappy about it.
February 3, 2006 at 8:39 pm #137789gossipingraeMemberi’ve used both of them before. when i said i wanted to take a break i meant i really wanted to take a break. when i had my eye on someone else, i used it as a poor breakup method.
February 7, 2006 at 2:09 pm #137787LucifinaMemberQuestion…what is your definition of “hooking up”? Are we talking about casual sex, kissing, dating….? Just wanted to clear that up because I saw an episode on Dr. Drew about this and people have different meanings.
February 7, 2006 at 8:22 pm #137784EEDOKMemberIn my experiences it usually means things just aren’t working out, and in most cases it’s better to work through the problem then just take a break from it.
February 8, 2006 at 2:30 am #137790BShink21MemberIn my experience of “taking a break” it meant she need time to herself to think things through. It ended up being GOOD!=)
February 8, 2006 at 2:53 am #137783OreoMemberSometimes people need time away from each other to actually take a look at the relationship from the outside and decide where to go from there, good or bad. Isn’t there some cheesy 80s song about that? *Don’t mean to offend those who like the song…just cannot remember the name!*
And sometimes, it’s just a cop out because the time away is “Woo hoo…got rid of the stage 7 clinger!” so yeah…it all depends 🙂February 27, 2006 at 4:48 pm #137782sciencefeelingMemberIt nomally means the person is thinking over THAT SPECIFIC relationship. Could be because of someone else, could be just because…they are not happy with the situation as it is. Is it really important why? the question is…they are running away from their partner, for whatever reason.
When you say that, is not that you are thinking about life, you can talk about life with your partner, is that you are of a defininte breakup, but not ready to do so yet.Natalia.-
February 27, 2006 at 6:00 pm #137788KudoParticipantI won’t vote,but I will express my opinion on this topic :p
People who really love and care about each other don’t need breaks or vacations from each other. If you’re in a relationship and someone tells you that they want or need a break, then there’s something wrong in the relationship.
I think “breaks” in relationships are a crock.
February 27, 2006 at 6:22 pm #137781Jeff HesterKeymasterMaybe “take a break” is a euphemistic way of saying “make a break?”
Maybe break equals broken?
April 25, 2006 at 5:58 am #137792YunaMemberIt means that that person needs some time to think over their relationship with the other person in my view. I haven’t had to ‘take a break’ yet so I’m not really sure. I’m happy and very much in love with my boyfriend and I hope it never comes to that!
