i am relatively new to IM and would like to use one-for-all product. i don’t need 1001 skins , emoticons, or any extra-features – i need a down-to-earth software, which hooks up with those different clients, and does it reliably. since i can’t seem to find a forum on jabber here, maybe some of you experienced users can just give me an answer as to what would be your favorite!
thanks!! christian

Assuming your running on Windows, and you want something that works with other messengers (AIM, Yahoo, etc.), you pretty much nailed the top choices; Odigo, Jabber & Trillian. I’ll tell you what i think of them, tho i haven’t used them all, so someone else will have to pipe in with their opinion too.
Odigo – been around a long time. I tried it once, but at the time they weren’t compatible with msn messenger. It was a little flakey, though the interface was kinda cool. They also have some very nice skins. I don’t run it any more, so maybe some current users can comment.
Jabber – I checked out Jabber, and it’s a cool concept. The weird thing is that they don’t have one network or one client. There are dozens of jabber clients, and the other IMs are supported by plugins on the server. The trick is finding a server that is reliable and that you can trust to be around (same for the clients). I ended up passing on Jabber, mostly because it seems like more of a developer’s plaything.
Trillian – I tried an earlier version of Trillian and had trouble staying connected to msn. Gave it up for a while, then gave it another try when the .70 version came out. This one is very cool. Very nice skins, and maintains the connections very reliably. I still have yahoo and msn on my system, but i now also have Trillian. Definately worth a look.

btw, nice feature… did you know ANY member can create a poll? heheh

Jabber is also focused on the corporate market, not the consumer market. Like fanatic says, they have a lot of clients, but you’ve got to find your own server.
If I had to choose today, Trillian would be my pick. It’s got good compatibility. It’s not perfect though. The configuration options can be intimidating, but it works.

Trillian is the way to go, and with odigo as an friendly, tho often slow alternative. -
