Spike
MemberIn regards to this post, I think we need to redesign and reorganize the Chat and IM Alternatives Forums, and come up with a better name, as well.
They aren’t really alternaitves, they’re either multi-protocol IM clients or…I really don’t know how you would classify IRC, but it should be in there somewhere, along with Gaim and Trillian and any others we can think of (Odigo, Skype…?).

MemberBleh, I guess we’re going to end up taking care of it in the forum support forum. Just thought we might want to further discuss the reorganization a bit in private, but whatever, just let this topic die.

KeymasterI think we need a section for all the “alternative” instant messengers. They aren’t just Jabber clients or multi-network clients like Trillian, Gaim and Fire. It also includes IM programs with their own network, like QQ.
There are two things that should be factored into the decision to give an product it’s own forum: market share (current or potential) and/or volume of posts. They “could” all be lumped in one big forum, but would it be difficult to sort through and find the ones that are meaningful to me?
What I don’t want is an overly complex hierarchy with a bunch of little-used forums.
Proposals, anyone?

MemberI think Trillian’s forum remains inactive and hence it and Gaim can be merged into one forum called Multi Protocol/Network clients and any other simmilar IM software would fall into the same category.
As long as IRC is concerned I dont know where should it lie if not in Chat and IM Alt.

A Multi Protocol forum would be perfect to group those programs into…

KeymasterFor easy reference, here’s the current structure:
Trillian
- Trillian News
- Trillian Support
Chat & IM Alternatives
- Alternative Instant Messengers
- General IM News
- Jabber News
- Google Talk
- Google Talk News
- IRC
- IRC News
What I’d like to see is a similar outline that shows your recommendations.

ParticipantThis may be overly simplified, but…
- Chat and IM Alternatives
- Alternative Instant Messengers
- Google Talk
- IRC
- Multi-Network Clients
- Trillian
- Trillian News
- Gaim
- Gaim News
- Trillian
The “Trillian Support” and “Gaim Support” would simply be the top-level forum in each of those, instead of having subforums within each section.

KeymasterI’m still not sure about Google Talk and IRC having their own forum…I know they are widely recognized, but not widely used. IRC forum hardly gets any posts, even less than Google Talk. I don’t know.
Either way what Tigerblade just posted looks good to me, if you must keep GT and IRC with their own forums.

ParticipantHow about some input from the mentor there? (Me) Well, here is what I think:
- Chat and IM Alternatives
- Alternative Instant Messengers
- Google Talk
- IRC
- Multi-Network Clients
- Trillian
- Trillian News
- Gaim
- Gaim News
- Trillian
- Alternative Instant Messengers
That’s how I think it should be done, since Google Talk, IRC, Trillian, (and I’m sure Gaim) don’t get that many things. They usually get a few every month or so.

MemberI think the more we seclude them, the less attention they’ll get, so we need to take a shot and give them some more attention so they’ll get more posts and traffic. Here’s my proposal (coming from the mentor of the forums in question 😎 ):
- Multi-Protocol Instant Messengers
- Trillian
- Trillian News
- Gaim
- Gaim News
- Possibly others, like Miranda…?
- Trillian
- Alternative Instant Messengers
- Google Talk
- Google Talk News
- Internet Relay Chat
- Other Instant Messengers (popular alternatives may recieve their own subforum, such as QQ)
- Google Talk

KeymasterGood ideas. Question though — will the average Joe know what a “multi-protocol instant messenger” is? Would it be simpler to call it “All-In-One Instant Messengers?” and then explain what that means in the description?
Also, IRC isn’t really an “alternative instant messenger” but it is (sort of) an “instant messaging alternative.” We need to figure out what to call this thing and where it fits.

ParticipantWhat about for IRC, or more of it, Alternative Chat Tools? I mean, that there tells you a lot, and can be used for the Instant Messengers, and the things in that section which are not.

MemberTigerblade wrote:how about “Other Instant Messenger Services”?
Ah, but it’s not really a “service”, now is it? 😉I think IRC is under-represented for all that it is, but I’m really torn here. I can’t make up my mind whether to give IRC its own forum with subforums such as “Server Talk: Implementing and Managing your IRCd”, and “IRC Clients: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.”
With the changes people have made, I’d like to rethink my structure a bit, here.
- Multi-Network (All-In-One) Instant Messengers
- Trillian
- Trillian News
- Gaim
- Gaim News
- Other Multi-Network Messengers
- Trillian
- Google Talk
- Google Talk Discusison
- Google Talk News
- Alternative Instant Messengers
My reasoning behind this is that Google Talk is only going to expand, and hiding it in another category will only lessen the amount of attention it recieves. I purposefly left out IRC from this list because I really don’t know where to put it, that’s up to you guys (it’s hard…really…) Ideas?

ParticipantBah, stupid IRC. I do like your outline Spike, and I think that it really is the way to go, since you have the multi, GT (which after it and AOL join, heh ba-bang, posts arrive), and Alternative. I think IRC should go under the Alternative, since I mean it is another thing to chat on and such, with sending messages, and getting them instantly. Maybe we could have that, in the alternatives along with like QQ and others like that…
