Repressing Popup IMs

Is there a way to NOT have IM windows popup and take focus when someone sends you an instant message, possibly have a sound occur instead? It’s annoying to be taken out of a fullscreen application and have the popup IM window take control.

You could try putting up an away message, and checking the “Hide windows while I’m Away” option. That’s probably the best option when you’re using a big fullscreen application.

You could also try some sort of add-ons, I can’t recall the exact names (AiMutation and Aim+?) that could allow such features. Otherwise, you could use Trillian which does have the option of keeping messages minimized at the task bar until you click upon it.
