Memberi have a saved aim conversation from around a year ago, and there were 2 pictures in the conversation. i did not right click on the pictures to save them individually, i just saved the conversations.
now the conversation file itself is much larger than any other conversation with just text, but when i open it I cannot see the pictures, they come up as red x’s.is there anyway to view the pictures, to get them back anyway? the converation file is larger so it must recognize there is some picture/file inside the conversation…..what can i do?
(the folder and contents of where the file was saved wont be there anymore…this convo is from a LONG time ago, and i have it burned onto a cd…the fact remains the file is about 10x larger than a normal IM conversation with just text, and big red x’s appear where the pics should be)

MemberI wish there were a way. I myself am in the same exact position. The huge empty space with the X really just mocks you 😛

Memberthere has to be a way, even if its a really crappy quality image of the original

MemberI felt the same way you did. The file size of the conversation does indeed suggest there is more than just the text there. But I’ve been long out of ideas. I don’t see any way of getting them back.

MemberSure thing. I know how frustrating it is to know there’s no other way to get the picture than that one source, so I will be happy to let you know.

MemberAre you viewing the conversation as html, in a browser?
April 29, 2007 at 8:23 am #160321Rebirth
MemberYes, I am. I’m sure biggun is too. That’s the default way to open them, and I’m not even sure how else you could open them.

MemberAre there image placeholders, or can you look at the html source to see where it’s trying to get the image from?
If you can see where it’s trying to retrieve it, you might be able to locate it somewhere. Do a search on your computer for the filename, and be sure to click on “more advanced” in the search window and checkmark “search system folders” “Search hidden files and folders” and “search sub folders” and have the search hunt through your drive(s).
It’s worth a shot to see what the html says for the image, within the tags…no guarantees though, I’m thinking you probably won’t get the images you’re missing, unless it was in a different folder and you moved the actual log file, and it can’t find the image in the new folder you put the log file in.

MemberHmm, it’s a bit odd. In the HTML, there’s a new line for where the picture is, even though in the actual conversation, it wasn’t sent in a new line, but the previous line with some text. Anyway, it does tell me the name of the file, the height, width, and size. However, this conversation was originally logged from my last PC in 2004. It was then transferred to this PC when I bought it. So I doubt it would be anywhere else. I did search anyway, though. No luck.

MemberI think you’re outta luck if it references the file being in the same location as the log.

MemberYeah, I know. As I said before, I gave up hope awhile ago of getting the picture. I just wanted to let the other person know, really.

MemberI know this topic is a year old, but I wanted to share my method of retrieving mp3s, pictures, etc, from saved AIM convos. It is a tedious process, but depending on what’s there, it may be worth it.
Step 1: Go to editplus.com, download and install it.
Step 2: Create a backup copy of your .htm saved conversation file.
Step 3: Open EditPlus, and find your saved IM file (depending on its size, it may take a while to open and format. For a quicker load, you may want to change the file’s extension from .htm to .dat for example).
Step 4: Go to the bottom of the file, where you’ll see lots of random characters, followed by the tag “”. Delete the tag.
Step 5: Go to Search-Find, type in “DATA” and hit “Previous.” That will take you to the beginning of the current file (picture, sound, whatever), and will look something like “” Move your cursor just past the “>” sign.
Step 6: While holding CTRL+SHIFT, press the “HOME” key. This will select all text prior to the spot you were at.
Step 7: Hit the “DEL” key.
Step 8: Go to File-Save As…, and type in a name for your file, ex. “1.jpg” (the extension changes depending on file type…if the first few characters say “GIF89” for example, then it is a .gif picture file…if they say “RIFF…WAVE” then it is a .wav sound file. MAKE SURE the Encoding in your Save As.. window says “ANSI”!!!
Step 9: Go to the folder you saved your file in, and attempt to open it.If you have more than one file, you can repeat steps 4 through 9, but you first have to delete the previous file (that will also make the saved conversation file open quicker). So, after you have pulled the first picture out, re-open the saved conversation file, go to the end, and Search-Find Previous (Shift + F3) until you find the “” string. Select everything from that point down, delete, and save your convo file. Repeat steps 4 through 9, until all binary files have been pulled out.
Hope this helps anyone!
