In your opinion, what is the most depressing song of all time?
I’m looking for something that relies more on instruments to create the effect, and not vocals.
January 22, 2005 at 10:23 pm #112625MartinBradleyMemberTo be honest, I think the most depressing song will be a combination of both lyrics and instruments.
A few suggestions:
Dry Your Eyes – The Strokes
Otherside and Under The Bridge – Both by Red Hot Chili PeppersJanuary 22, 2005 at 10:36 pm #112626erasedMemberMe-Staind.
January 22, 2005 at 11:05 pm #112624OreoMemberAlmost anything by “The Smiths” or “Morrisey” it’s not just the vocals ….it’s often the instuments…..the wailing guitar, sad piano….it’s all there….and don’t get me started with the lyrics on some of those songs. When I was younger and in a misery loves company mood…I’d throw that on. Now I listen to it every so often just for fun. 🙂
Edit:
I know you were not really looking for lyrics….but here are the lyrics to these songs I mentioned, now imagine matching instrumentals. Also I forgot to mention Albinoni’s “Adagio” that’s a sad one.

What atmosphere do you want to create and where do you want to create it? If you need something instrumental, I could recommend lots and lots…
If you just need something to bring you down, try Evanescence – My immortal. That song almost always brings me to tears.
But, let me know what you need it for exactly (which sentiments you want to call by hearing the music) and I’ll find something for you. 🙂
January 23, 2005 at 12:29 am #112627TigerbladeParticipanti gotta agree, lyrics working hand in hand with the music is probably more effective, but it kinda depends on what kind of depressing you’re looking for. “my girlfriend broke up with me”, “my dog died”, “life sucks” etc…
Morbid Angel – Desolate Ways (this one’s an instrumental)
Blink182 – Adam’s Song
Dope – Another Day Goes By
Filter – Take a Picture
Evanescence – Eternal (instrumental)edit… DJ beat me to two separate things in my post. way to be on the ball there.
January 23, 2005 at 2:12 am #112629AwesomeSauceParticipantCool. These are all pretty good songs, but I was looking for something like “Six days at the bottom of the Ocean”, by Explosions in the Sky, if you’ve ever heard it.
Hyperbyte… I was just about to say I wanted something about love, but maybe not, since the song I just mentioned above has no lyrics whatsoever. Though they do have some romantic songs (six days at the bottom of the Ocean isn’t one of them), they aren’t the depressing romantic.
January 23, 2005 at 3:34 am #112630colinMemberIm just curious as to why you need a “depressing, romatic song”. And yes, most things by Evanescence is sad-sounding.
January 23, 2005 at 3:47 am #112631LucifinaMemberOh My God…come on…how many songs are out there that are like this….i have atleast 100 just on my play list now alone. But there is one that I’ve come across and I think it’s really sad it’s called Teddy Bear by Red Solvine. Of course there is My Immortal, Good Man by Idia Arie, Broken Vow by Josh Groban, Whiskey Lullaby by Brad Paisely, and El Beso del Final (kiss of the end) by Christina Aguilera….that’s just a few on my list.
January 23, 2005 at 3:58 am #112632gossipingraeMemberEverything by Stereofuse is pretty sad. It could be about a breakup with a boyfriend/girlfriend, but to me it’s about death. I’m sure you guys have heard of it before. However, if you download it, make sure you download the acoustic version. I love this song, I want it played at my funeral when I die.
January 23, 2005 at 1:31 pm #112622Jeff HesterKeymasterI always thought that Sarah McLachlan’s music always sounds depressing and sad and it’s the way she plays music although her voice also adds to the effect. That song Angel by her is depressing to me.
Another song that I think is sad is Eric Clapton – Tears in Heaven. Always makes me think that someone I know and care for is dead.
January 23, 2005 at 10:24 pm #112628RabidKittenParticipantThanks to a friend of mine…well…ok someone I know of, I have a crapload of Sarah McLachlan on my computer. I haven’t heard it all, yet, but I’m working on it.
I really try not to think of the most depressing or sad or downtrodden anything I know, really. Personally, I know that when I used to drown myself in music when i was sad I’d actually listen to music that had a strangely upbeat message or touching message but it was all about the music and melody, a lot of the time it was paino or in minor melodic tones…something of the sort. Something that I recently listened to a lot over the summer was something I nearly gagged over when I heard who it was by. Spears… *gag* Yes…THE Spears. “Everytime”. *shrug* That is not the saddest song I can think of, but it is the most recent song I’ve let myself drown in my own self pity with. Put that, “I Quit” by Hepburn, Moonlight Sonata, “So Much for my Happy Ending” By that Canadian Tart, Avril and “Iris” By GooGoo Dolls and I’m in for a good clean crying session. *Enthusiastic thumbs up*
