KeymasterSARS is a serious health concern in many parts of the world. I ran across a blurb that showed someone using modified MSN emoticons with SARS-masks over the faces.
Here’s the article. Is it for real? Is it someone’s attempt at humor, a political statement, or a way of diffusing a potentially stressful situation?
What are your thoughts?

ParticipantYeah, I saw the article yesterday and thought it was quite funny.
Not having to deal with much of the actual problem here in Western Canada, its easy to forget that there are many people who are afflicted by this disease, mainly overseas, but there is a small re-occuring outbreak in Toronto.
But I really don’t think these emoticons should be taken too seriously. If you do find it offensive, i guess thats your choice, but I think some humor on the situation is needed. Otherwise we’ll all go insane!! Especially with the MadCow “Outbreak” here (If you can call one cow an outbreak that is )May 30, 2003 at 2:58 am #62181detn8r
ParticipantWell, I do not find it funny. And I do not think we need a laugh at it.
I live in Toronto, and we have lost much money, and close respect we once had, as well as friends, family, and neighbours.
It’s not a funny situation where we must walk down Main St. wearing masks to protect our selves from our friends from China, who somehow forgot to clean a type of cat properly, and created a disease.
As for the comment on a small outbreak, far from. 30+ deaths, and thousands infected, and hundreds of thousands who loose out on money for having to quarenteen them selves, just so that they can be protected, is incredbly heartbreaking, especially the ones with children and elderly living with them.
Of course Toronto will take very long to heal from this, as it never seems to end. No matter how much Toronto Mayer Mel Lastman says it is.
Do you Americans think you will pay to see a concert at the Sky Dome in Toronto to boost our economy, dispite the concern of SARS? I’m sure many of you would have second thoughts on saying YES.
I wish Toronto could bounce back, as we thought we could like our neighbour New York, after September 11th, but its hardly going to happen, or atleast any time soon.
But, our case is not even close as whats happening over in the Asian community countries.
My conclusion? Its disrespectful. I doubt the creator of the skin knows the real situation that we face.-det. My $2 and 34 cents worth.

MemberYes, I do NOT find it funny either, I saw that on mess.be the other day, and wanted to have a go at that person who was saying it is funny but I didn’t. And do not want to either. But please try to understand that its true, and very serious. We should not laugh at it.

KeymasterYes, but do you think whoever created it was trying to be funny?
May 30, 2003 at 5:58 am #62187shifter
ParticipantWell, according to the media the situation is not as serious as you are describing in Toronto. Hell, The Prime Minister even said there was no SARS crisis in Toronto last week. I have friends who live in the Toronto area, and they claim it is not that big a deal. So thats all I had to go on, I’m very sorry if it is as grave as you make it out to be. But I don’t think a sense of humor about it can be a bad thing, and I stand by what i said.
And yes, Jeff, I do believe the creator was likely trying to be funny.
This forum seems so touchy and serious, i can’t seem to post a view about anything without getting harsh critisism…ah well at least it keeps it interesting.

KeymasterYahoo has something that I can’t read because it’s all in Chinese, but it also shows a SARS smiley. Check it out at http://cn.promo.yahoo.com/minisite/sarsmsgr/
This in turn links to a Yahoo web site that has a skin for Yahoo! Messenger that features a smiley removing his SARS mask:
http://cn.messenger.yahoo.com/skin/index.htmlCan anyone translate this for us??

Memberoh come on people. I really don’t think that an emoticon pack is really something to get worked up about. Anyway who says its a sars pack? Maybe its a doctors or a vets pack! If you don’t think it’s funny, dont download it!

MemberI just love how SARS has gotten where it blames cats for the problem, ummmm hello cats arnt the damn reason. If it was dont you think america would be having a bad problem too? After all we have millions of cats around this big country yet hardly any problems. ONly problems in california have been from people going over seas and getting it and coming back and then not telling anyone.

MemberI also read this article, and I thought it was only ment as a joke. In a time of such seriousness, people need to laugh… so someone made a joke out of SARS. It does not anger me, nor does it make me laugh… But, I know that it was just ment for people to lighten up. Just think of it like an episode of Saturday Night Live. When the US president (Bill Clinton) had an affair with Monica Lewinski, SNL made funny skits of this incident… not to anger the government or make a political statement, but instead to say, “Ok he is a regular person, lighten up.” That is exactly what this SARS-themed MSN Messanger is about, in my opinion anyway.

I dont think you understood what I said fully.
What I did mean was, a resturant (or some kind of food distrubtion place) was cooking a meal of cat, and wasnt careful enough, and attracked a disease.
I’m not sure, if the cat originally had it, or they created it… (oh, and by cat I mean of the cat family.. IE like some type of lynx)Quote:quote:I just love how SARS has gotten where it blames cats for the problem, ummmm hello cats arnt the damn reason.OK mr. doctor expert. Since it didnt come from a TYPE of cat FAMILY (as I heard on Global National (Canada’s top news broadcast) you mind telling us what DID create it?
No? Didnt think so. This is the biggest idea that scientists have come up with. Obvisiously they are trying to prove what did… but they think they have worked it out to this.
Oh… and thanks for your wounderful comment. -asshole.
I just love how some residents of California arent as ignorant as you.:(June 13, 2003 at 7:47 pm #62195redcap
