ParticipantDid you use and addon like Messenger Plus or Msg Discovery or patched msn with Mess Patch? There could be weird conflicts created by using many addons.

ParticipantNo I have no add ons at all. I got a reply from msn…talk about useless!!! They said it might be because I have more than 1,200 contacts…yeah, right!
Their other more sensible suggestions included getting my contacts to log back in again..that didn’t help.
That…. privacy settings allow only your My Allow List contacts to see your Online status and to send you instant messages. But how can that be relevant? the people I want to talk to are already ON my allow list!!
What to do if I receive an “Add contact notice”…..eh?! The whole point is that its my existing contacts that cant see me, what have additional contacts got to do with it???
They then asked me to answer the following questions…but there weren’t any!!!
I despair….would a reload of windows help or am I lumbered with it? I thought this was only happening on msn mesenger but its happening on Windows messenger too now.

ParticipantI’m pretty sure it’s a server issue with msn. It seemed to resolve itself last month when it occured for the first time, or rather msn must have sorted it out. I had exactly the same problem and it really is absolutely maddening. So far since early December none of my contacts have said that I appear offline even when I’m not, but then again I haven’t asked them about my status as they see it.
I strongly recommend that you e mail msn about it using their help & “contact us” web page. They can’t fix it if they don’t know about it. Please let us all know if you’re still having the problem and what msn say.

MemberIt does seem like a random problem, happening to some users sometimes, and some users all the time, suggesting it is a problem at the Microsoft end of things.
Once anyone knows anything extra, please feel free to post back with it, however could we please avoid turning this thread into one where everyone is telling us that they have the same problem. Thanks! 🙂

ParticipantFair point there Martin, but what’s needed is a permanent solution. I think at the moment my messenger is working ok but if folks can’t see each other it makes the messenger system pretty much useless. If enough people are having these problems then they can get together and point it out to Microsoft.
I think that if one or two people report it, then MSN will take no notice. If a whole group do at the same time, then something is more likely to be done about it. It’s all well and good saying “hey it’s just affecting a few people”, but if you’re one of the unlucky few it can cause massive inconvenience or worse, especially if you have family and friends abroad like myself. For messenger to be permanently malfunctioning for a minority of people is unfair and unacceptable when a user has paid for the right to use Windows facilities when using their computer at the time of purchase.
Again I urge all those who are having these problems to insist on Microsoft fixing it (politely of course) and post back any replies and updates here as Martin suggested. As I said, they can’t fix it if they don’t know about it!!!

Memberhello I received a reply from MSN Messenger Monday Jan 16/06 and here is part of their reply:”MSN Messenger server is currently having a small outage which is currently causing this issue as of this time. How ever we assure you that this outage only temporary and a permanent fix will be available as soon as possible.
I had e-mailed them and stated that I had followed their “solutions” to no avail, did some checking and that the problem seemed to be with them. this is of no paticualr help but thought it may be interesting to read

ParticipantIt’s very interesting laura, thanks for posting. At least we have some kind of explanation finally on this particular issue.

MemberHey all,
Just wanted to let you know that I have found a partial solution to this issue. If you remove and then readd a contact it will then force them to show up online (and you online to them). Well, if they are *currently* online, that is.
I’ve had to do it a few times with some contacts so it is pretty annoying, but it does work around part of the issue for now.
Hope it helps some.
