Any posibility we could have a section for help on homework or any other school talk?
December 2, 2004 at 12:22 am #106842Someguy03MemberOhh that would be fun. But what kind of topics would you discuss? Math? Social Studies? It’s all on Google. I like the idea but I don’t see what you wouldn’t be able to find elsewhere.
December 2, 2004 at 12:37 am #106844ys8er2323Membergoogle doesnt solve everything you know. sometimes its better to discuss with someone.
December 2, 2004 at 2:46 am #106849QuiksilverMemberI have a problems section on my forums. Homework is one of them. Maybe there should be something such as “Education”. I don’t know though…the forums might be quite empty so we should see if there are a lot of people in support of it. I am in support of the idea, but it would be pointless if no one else wants it right?
-quikDecember 2, 2004 at 3:07 am #106843TigerbladeParticipanti dont know, it seems like it could be a good idea, but there’s already a lot of forums… the off-topic section is gonna start to get bigger than the IM sections pretty soon. I guess its up to the mods, as usual…
i think some people would start to abuse it though, and just post homework problems expecting someone else to solve it. if its just little bits of something small that someone just couldnt quite get, that would be fine, but not “here’s my problem, what’s the answer?”
December 2, 2004 at 3:16 am #106841DavidParticipantI think the major problem with that is response time, you probably wouldn’t get an answer in less than a few hours… and homework is generally due the next day, so you wouldn’t get an answer until it’s too late.
December 2, 2004 at 3:23 am #106845ys8er2323Memberwell if it was a big paper in which you had time then this is good. I mean you never know for sure until you give it a try.
December 2, 2004 at 4:16 am #106850QuiksilverMemberYou should only ask if you really need help though. Your supposed to learn in school…
December 2, 2004 at 4:19 am #106839OreoMemberGuys, being a Social Studies teacher I have to tell you, your TEACHERS and LIBARARIANS are your BEST resource. They work together and and the teacher is the one who assigns the homework in the first place. You just have to learn not to be afraid to talk to them and ask questions. Any teacher worth his/her salt would be HAPPY that you came to him/her. And if all else fails…there’s always tutors. This kind of stuff is really better face to face where it can be explained to you directly. Or via IM where questions can be solved right away…and after an experience before exams last year…I’m not willing to help most people via IM….I was swamped for hours on a Saturday!
December 2, 2004 at 4:54 am #106851camsterMemberOreo, I agree that teachers are best resources, but I have to say that I support this idea. You have no way of communicating with teachers afterschool for the most part, and many people aren’t comforable with asking questions to the teacher. Many times people need advice from more than one person if they don’t get something. And although you can IM people for information, a lot of times THEY won’t get it, and there aren’t people online with your homework. However, moderators would have to be sure that people aren’t copying all of their geometry homework on here in hopes that they wouldn’t have to do it. This forum would also be useful for projects, where you could ask people if they have good resources for your topic. I support this idea. I understand Google and friends can sometimes help, but I think it would add a very helpful addition that many people will use.
December 2, 2004 at 9:37 pm #106852gossipingraeMemberI agree. I would support this also. Oreo, you are a social studies teacher…high school, right? Well as you know, high school is way different from college. In college, professors give out their phone numbers and email addresses so students can email them with problems or questions if they cannot make it to office hours. High school teachers don’t give out their phone number or email address or have office hours. At the end of the day, teachers and students leave, and lots of times, a teacher doesn’t hang around after school lets out, unless they tell a student they will do so.
It’s harder for students to get ahold of a teacher outside of high school under normal operating hours. Maybe this would help others. I know I am horrible at math, so if I had a question, I could just ask.
Just a thought, though.

Actually, you’d be surprised. We have to have office hours, AND have an e-mail where kids can reach us and ask questions. ALSO, some teachers DO give out their home phone number for emergencies. You’d be surprised how many HS teachers give out their e-mails or have websites….kids just don’t use them b/c they are afraid to ask questions. It’s one of those things they have to get over by university (as I’m sure you well know.). If you can’t ask your prof. for help, you’re in trouble.
December 2, 2004 at 10:40 pm #106854kron_19792000MemberOreo you are a Social Studies teacher damn I am shivering in my boots 🙂 (No offense intended), but gossipingrae has a point for some reason approaching a teacher in school was TOUGH. It is so much easier now at the uni level. I gues it has some thing to do with the fact that the teachers in school had a staff room or at least that is how they had it in my school and it can get pretty intimidating going in there, the teachers in school had a pretty tight schedule so getting hold of them was that much tougher. I hold my teachers in the highest regard but then they simply did not have the time to go in depth, with some thing like math there is no one answer and finding the time to discuss the problem with a teacher becomes tough.
As dragonreborn said people should ask questions only if they are REALLY stuck. It could be pretty helpful for those minor doubts that you have.December 3, 2004 at 1:32 am #106846ys8er2323Memberwell the schools around here arent like that so yea…… =/
December 3, 2004 at 1:42 am #106847colinMemberAlthough some teachers in my school have tutoring, a lot do not. I am definitly in favor of this. I know a lot of times I am up til midnight or later, trying to do an assignment that I don’t really understand the material.
