Participantthis was something I was talking about with some friends, and decided to ask here…
If we could have one piece of technology from a science fiction movie now, what would it be? Light sabers? hovercraft? androids? something else? I’m curious to see what people would pick… would you pick something useful and practical, or something that’s purely for the fun of having?
if you want to be specific or the item isnt commonly known, include the name of the movie its from

Memberthat is the hardest question -ever-! ugh…why’d you have to ask? well anyway…i think i’d pick the X-wing! I personally think it’d be a lot of fun flying around in space in a one man space craft…mmhmm given an enemy or two I wouldn’t get out! plus you’d get to see other planets too…imagine the possibilities

MemberHmmmm thats a damn good question….
I was going to put some profound thouht into this matter… but then I realised this would take too much effort so i’ll go for….
*drum roll*
a lightsaber!!! just cos it would be cool….
Seriously though i’d probably choose something like a teleportation device so we could colonise the galaxy and all that deep stuff that would lead from said colonisation… or possibly hologram TV….
mmmmmmmmm TV…. in 3D….

MemberI think it’d be really cool to have a Star Trek Teleporter. I’m curious how it would be to get transported, to be demolecularized then put back together *shudder* But I’m sure it’d be cool.
Actually, I read in Popular Science last year that they have made a teleporter and have (succesfully?) teleported some small object around a corner. The whole process involves small mirrors and small sattelite dishes, but the pictures looked pretty cool.

MemberErrrr I think about the only think they have managed to “teleport” are things on the quantum scale as in really really really small things that are very difficult to detect. For how small the thing they may have managed to teleport are think of a fly in a football stadium where the football field is an atom and the fly is the object they have managed to “teleport”. So in other words unimaginably small.
i may be completely out on teh size comparrisions there so any physics grads who know a bit more on these matters than me please feel free to correct me.
anyway slightly off topic there but it would be intresting to see how they got a teleporter to work, and expansions off this technology would also be pretty intresting… you might be able to get instantaneous communication with stuff like that which would be cool.

MemberImagine what’d it be like…if we actually had the technology of the science fiction movies. Sure someday we will be able to teleport and do lots of other cool stuff. Then what would they think of Science Fiction? Hm…it’s already been proven that time travel is possible (ask me about it if you want information on that) so I don’t see how other stuff can’t be possibly. Such as…lightsabers :-p. Imagine living in a star wars world and just being a citizen. Your life would be as it is now, just way more futuristic. So in other words it would seem like luxury to you now but in that time the richer people will own the cooler space-cars and the cooler space-ships and all the other super cool stuff. If there really is no other life than us out there (which I do not believe) then we have the whole universe to ourselves. When the sun explodes we’ll all be in the next galaxy over chilling on some weirdo planet we just turned into earth 6. They seem to have a plan on how to turn Mars into soemthing earth like (i have no idea how)…science fiction…im into that stuff! Imagine when our kids start screaming at us about “the technology of today is not liek your old 100 gigabyte computers”. We’d practically be doing everything off of the internet. It’d probably be possible to get a little “teleporter” that you hook up to your computer and you order something and POP it’s there…then we’d never see the outside world anymore folks…what a disappointment…no more shopping trips (online virtual malls?)but still awesome…i could go on and on but I’m done for now

All these possibilites….*giggle*November 16, 2004 at 3:13 am #104775DaJMan1800
MemberUgh… so many gadgets, all so cool… I think i’d take R2-D2, kuz wouldn’t it be great to have a little beeping buddy to do your homework?

Participant1. teleportation. currently the only thing “they” can teleport is subatomic particles… CrazyPenguin is on the right idea about the sizes, but imagine even smaller. think a speck of sand in the state of california. that’s about as much as they can do. the sheer amount of information required is staggering, and if the scan takes any time at all, its already out of date and useless. then there’s the problem of actually transferring the object to somewhere else. are you going to use the original material and data have it be reassembled elsewhere? or are you going to send just the data and have a stockpile of atoms somewhere else and have it assembled from scratch? and how are you going to send that amount of information? not even with the best of communications technology can this be done efficiently… yet.
2. time travel. you can travel back in time any time you want – just look at the stars. that’s old information, from thousands of years ago. as for moving forward in time, its really just a matter of distorting time for one individual as they approach the speed of light, which as far as we know is impossible, thanks to einstein’s relativity.
not much chance for either one of those, as nice as they’d be.
personally, id like to have hovercraft, like a hoverboard from back to the future, or something similar…. that’d make getting around a lot easier. otherwise, maybe a lightsaber…

MemberA long time ago I read a article that talked about how they were trying to teleport objetcs. The system worked like this, the would break up and object down to its components at one end and using the data about its constitution and composition the would remake it at the other end. So basically they would destroy the object at one end create a totally new object at the other end. It said they had some success with inanimate objects and that they were planning on trying it on animate objects.
That stuff scared the hell out of me think about it what if they did transfer the technology to human teleportation. You would die and then you would be re-born damn that would be freaky.November 16, 2004 at 4:13 am #104781syntax
MemberI would say a droid like C-3PO, it would be very useful since it knows so many languages. When you travel somewhere and weren’t familiar with the native language it would translate for you.

The phenomenon you are describing is not happening and is not even being tried, not with “object” at least. The only thing they managed to teleport is “quantum states” and I think photons right now. Some theoretical articles on teleportation of moleculss have been published, but no experimental good result achieved, or at least, published or patented. And the methond you are describing has been disregarded and the trials are based in an old property described by Einstein and Bose in the 30s.
I am not saying is not going to happen, but that is not the direction that researches are taking.

MemberI am going to going off topic here but what the hell this is a RANDOM ramblings forum so what the hell! Any way Science I would like to to know which theory of Einstein they use in what I said. By the way they have created a 3-D Fax I am not sure if that would constitue telepoetation or replication. But even if you considered it to be replication I do not feel it is a too big a streach to create an object with the exact same properties. So would this be called teleportation I do not know!
Any way on-topic again I would love teleportation no more 30min walks to schools… Can sleep for half an hour more every day 🙂November 17, 2004 at 2:57 am #104780RabidKitten
ParticipantI’m going to be boring and say Replicator. It’s about the most beneficial, I think. That and since I’m always up until the wee hours of the night, there’s never a store open when you feel the need to get a pizza. Heck, the ability to just whip up food in general would be nice… *looks are the bare cupboards* ugh…

i’m not familiar with the specific experiment she mentioned, but i’m sure relativity comes into play, since the subatomic particles they work with are moving at close to light speed. then of course there’s Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle, basically that you can either tell where an electron (or other particle) is, or you can tell how fast its moving. you cant do both, and that’s where the problem of the scanning comes in – if you dont get every exact detail perfectly correct, you’re screwed, even if its an inanimate object. basically its impossible.
ANYWAY – I didnt mean for this to turn into a physics debate, I just wanted to see what people would like to have. so far we have lightsabers, replicators, droids, and x-wings…. come on people, feel free to be creative, these dont have to come from star wars/trek.

MemberOk after spending a day in which large amounts of rain played a prominent part I have changed my mind…
the technology I most desire is a weather machine…. rain is a phenomenom which should only occur at night when I am not outside, and weather mahcines should regulate the climate to ensure this!!
Either that or forcefield umbrellas fitted to coats as standard…
