Memberwill aim ever allow periods, hyphens, etc. in screennames?? I have to believe that it would only add to their user base. I wonder how many people a day are turned off by having to use something like bill243534 as their screenname.

Memberwell, my guess is that what if someone ends up with a screenname like ..[)?!..? I mean, thats perfect for those that dont want to be identified! just great! and how do you remember whose who and wahts what? plus… certain charactaers might mess around with the files in AIM and weird things could happen

MemberThe identification might be the reason why they banned the symbols, or just because those symbols represent nothing to a letter or a number. Another reason why I think they won’t let you use those symbols is because they prolly run a code for every part of that messenger, in other words, it might bring up an error if they allowed it. I’m not sure, I’m not a computer whiz kid.

ParticipantIf extra symbols were allowed then what if your friend tells you his name is tommyboy and he forgets to say that it really is ..TommyBoy.. You could completely be talking seriously with someone and they aren’t even your friend. Even now with simple substitutions like 0 for o can cause trouble. I hope these symbols aren’t allowed, only more confusion will arise. I personally don’t see a difference between Bill42 and -Bill- You still have to use extra symbols, just different ones, at least you can be creative with numbers. Also, there will be tons of abusers who use —***~ and junk like that, ikk!

Memberi do that all the time. like my friends sn is MxxCHRIS and I play around and do MxxCHRlS. Most people dont notice because of the normal AIM font “I”s look like “l”s. But I dont want symbols like that in screennames. All it would do is confuse people.

Please STOP spamming the forums with this useless garbage, nobody cares if you agree, so unless you have something useful to add, do not reply. Thanks.

MemberIt is actually possible to use symbols. However not for basic AIM customers. AOL sells a software product called Identity services that allows such SNs as “null@null.net”. It’s actually just a lil quirk that they threw in to what identity services is really used for.
P.S. I know this cause I work for AIM :p

MemberOh for real? So I pay AOL a couple of bucks and then I get to make a screename like this: @04311? That’d be a lot of fun. Stupid AOL. Soon there’ll be a way to do that for free and poof we got spammers with screenames like &^(1122). Another reason to avoid AIM and go switch over to some other messengers. Why must all my friends believe that AIM is the only good one?
