MemberA buddy of mine said that Apple was planning to come out with a second generation iPad this winter that included a front-facing camera like the iPhone 4 with support for Facetime.
Anyone heard when this will be out? Any truth to the rumor? I really want to get an iPad, but if they are coming out with a newer version in a few months, I may hold off.

ParticipantI’ve heard the rumor but haven’t seen anything official. Heard it will be lighter weight too.

MemberSo when is this thing supposedly coming out? I want one, but I don’t want to wait unless it’s before the end of the year.
I read a headline yesterday that said if the iPad were classified as a computer, Apple would be outselling Dell, IBM… and all the other PC makers. Later that same day I read a tweet from a contact who said they now use their iPad far more often than their home PC, particularly for browsing.
So why ISN’T the iPad a computer?

ParticipantIt’s hard to say when the next version will be released. If it’s like the iPhone…probably next year some time. I don’t think there has been any official comment on when it’s coming or what will be included. It’s all rumor at this point.
The real difference between the iPad and a computer is that you can’t load programs onto it. You use apps instead. There are a few limitations to it. It does not support flash (natively – you can jailbreak and iPad and use it if you really want to go thru the effort). The keypad is still not what I envisioned. Yes, it’s larger than the iPhone, but I’m still much slower on it than I am on a regular keyboard. There are a few web based things (some surveys for example) that don’t work quite right – but in general it’s very good!
I indeed use my iPad for more than I ever imagined. My laptop is opened only about 25% of the time now. I find that for long forum posts or forums where I’m doing a lot of copy and paste from saved text the laptop is better. But for general browsing, checking things like Twitter, Facebook and even BBB – the iPad is much faster. (But I admit – for this post, I’m using the laptop because it would take me all day to type this out on the iPad – but I think that’s my issue not all users in general. I know my son can type really fast on his.)
I have the iPhone 4 and the front facing camera has been amusing but not of much actual use. Unless you do a lot of video chat it’s probably not a deal breaker – and remember, to use it you’d either have to have an app that supported video chat (which Yahoo does now) or have contacts with the new iPad or iPhone4. It won’t work with everything. As a camera – the iPhone would be much handier. The iPad would be a bit unwieldy to use for snapping regular pictures.
If you are lusting after an iPad I’d go ahead and get one! Apple is still selling them like hotcakes. Why would they want to release a new one when they are still going like gangbusters. I bet you won’t see a new version until the sales slow a bit.
