This was posted at the ICQ web site today by AOL:
“A bug has been found in the ICQ Voice Video & Games feature for versions earlier than 2001b. This bug is related to a feature that is being used by a small number of our users. Nonetheless, we recommend that you make sure you’re using a fixed ICQ version, and if not, upgrade to ICQ 2001b in which the problem is fixed.”

BigBlueBall.comJanuary 15, 2002 at 4:26 am #102732ROBMemberIs it a bug, or a clever ploy to get users to upgrade to the newest version of ICQ? This smells!
January 15, 2002 at 10:32 pm #102731Jeff HesterKeymasterI don’t think they’re doing this maliciously. Someone (not AOL) found a bug… a tiny bug… and they’ve fixed it in the newer versions.
If they didn’t tell users how to avoid the security hole, I’d say they were negligent!

BigBlueBall.comJanuary 16, 2002 at 3:33 am #102734FanaticMemberI think this year is going to be a big one for finding security holes in ALL the instant messengers. As more and more businesses use IM, security will be more important, and more holes will be found (and patched up).

If you think that just because you’re running 2001b you’re safe, you could be wrong! Check the screen shots. The telltale sign is in the ICQ user menu. If your menu includes the options “Launch Voice/Video” and “Launch Games”, you need to update ICQ.
Why oh why does ICQ insist on loading more and more features into an already bloated program, especially when these new features open up new opportunities for bugs and security holes!?

January 19, 2002 at 5:12 pm #102733FanaticMemberBasically AOL doesn’t want to pay to support older versions, so it’s in their best interests (not MINE) to get everyone to upgrade to the very latest version, even if it is full of crap that I don’t want.
I used to like ICQ ‘cuz it was free, and it was a product of the people. Now it’s not only just a cog in a huge corp, but its grown to gargantuan proportions! And 90% of the time all i really want to do is your basic text chat!
I guess that’s why i don’t use it much anymore.
oh, and btw, I don’t have anything against big corporations, ‘cept when they forget that serving people is what makes or breaks them.

Bugs?
Bugs, surely there are no bugs in software, simply unsupported features.
This feature is helping promote a new build.Hey Bill! you listening to this? Oh yeah, he charges for his fixes huh.
