Are you guys logged in using the same Gtalk name? That won't work if you are. If not… I don't know, my best guess is that you can't both be doing it at the same time through the same internet connection.January 10, 2007 at 11:40 pm #156748mfenechMember
Your dad is using the chat function within Gmail, as opposed to using the Google Talk program. You both have to be using the program for file transfers or voice chatting.January 11, 2007 at 1:33 am #156749
right me and my dad have google/talk to run on start-up
me upstairs and him downstairs,,,:]
what we do is we both click the google talk system tray icon
so google talk appears at the top of the screen
i mouse over his name to start a chat
we chat for a bit to find out if his ready for the transfer
but when i scroll to SEND-FILES its greyed out for some reason
but we've done it plenty of times before with other things
(I CANNOT SUSS IT ME LIKE) any sugestions plzJanuary 11, 2007 at 2:08 am #156744Jeff HesterKeymaster
mfenech is right, it sounds like Google Chat is intercepting your message and telling your Google Talk program that he doesn't have file transfer capability. If so, there's an easy way to avoid this. Make sure he closes Gmail before you try the file transfer. That way you'll know it's your Google Talk program talking to his Google Talk program, and Chat isn't getting in the way.
Let us know if that works.January 11, 2007 at 2:59 am #156750

Right-click the Gtalk tray icon and click “About” and see what version he is running. Make sure he is running the same version as you (or newer).
I'm running 18.104.22.168 — some older versions did not support file transfers.February 8, 2007 at 4:19 am #156746SparksMember
Really, I'm pretty sure it's only the most recent version that has file transfer.
(Also, right now, file transfer doesn't work with all other Jabber clients, since Google Talk defined their own file transfer system atop of their Jingle streaming library. As other clients implement that system, file transfer will work with other clients.)
