sending files over msn

I have been trying to send messages over MSN and it tells me that i need to contact my network provider. I know that many people have posted about this problem, but I do not understand their answers. If someone could please explain to me how to get rid of a firewall and change my port number, i’d very greatly appreciate that!! Thanks!

First of all, what is the exact error message? Please be more specific. Third, do you know if you have a firewall running? What operating system do you have? What version of MSN?

Thanks so much for replying so fast :).
I have MSN 5.0…im not sure about the whole firewall running, i dunno if i have one which is really the problem i have.
“We could not send this file because the connection is blocked. Please contact your system administrator or Internet service provider; they may be able to enable file transfers.”
That is the error message…
I hope that is a bit more specific for you!!

Still haven’t provided what operating system you have… hover over the items in your taskbar and see if anything with the word ‘Firewall’ or ‘Protect’ or something shows up.

I hovered and nothing said firewall or protect…
sorry, i forgot that… I have Windows ME
when i posted before, someone suggested about the firewall, but i dont even know how to see if i have one, let alone how to shut it off, that’s why i asked about in my question, if that helps!!
scary the people they give computers to, eh? heheh

Do you have Norton Antivirus? If you do what version is it? If its 2003, a firewall is included, if not, go to add/remove programs (start>settings>control panel>add/remove) and see if you see anything in there that relates to a firewall. (IE zone alarm, etc)

Is it just one contact your having problems sending files to? Or all of them. Are you sure that your contact doesnt have a firewall running? (if you dont know… ask:))

It’s every single contact on both my and my sister’s list. I can receive them but not send them 🙁

i had a problem just like this it means that on your computer there is a piece of software such as cybersitter this can be fidden you should ask all the people who use the computer if they have installed it the only way to be able to use file sharing is to remove this program

Are you running msn over a network? If so, thats more than likely where your prob is.

Hello Chelc,
I have had this problem before, it sounds like you are behind a router. and if so you should find out what type it is, and go to the router’s web site (do a google search if you don’t know the url) and look for a help link or something along that line. And to answer magistyk’s question about Window’s ME haveing a firewall, the answer is no. Hope I was of some help.

As he said, it’s called “cybersitter”.

However, your problem is far more likely a network problem. Is your PC directly connected to the internet? Or is there a router in between? Or maybe there is a PC that is sharing the internet? Or you are at work and there is a proxy server?
