I have made a clan for this game called LieroX. The clan name is Envy Our Valor, and I wanted to make a pic for us. Here is what I came up with.
Any CONSTRUCTIVE critisism or suggestions are welcome. The animal there is a gryphon. It is half-lion, half-eagle. It is often viewed as a couragous animal, so I put it on there.
April 30, 2005 at 9:35 pm #120703MrOatsMemberVery interesting Colin, I like it. 🙂 They only thing I have to say about it is that the yellow in the back “scene” takes some effect away from the actual logo itself. Maybe a dark blue back scene or any other dark color would be more effective.
April 30, 2005 at 11:33 pm #120697AwesomeSauceParticipantThat is a really neat picture. But I agree with MrOats about the background. Maybe it could be changed to something besides yellow, so you can easier distinguish the text and the gryphon.
Still, very cool though.
May 1, 2005 at 1:39 am #120699colinMemberWell the gryphon was actually a different color, but I made it kind of see-through. I actually wanted the main focus to be on the words, as it is the clan name. The gryphon was just to fill up some of the empty space. I also tried making the background a different color, but it didn’t really seem right any color other than yellow. I think it might be because the left part of the background kind of looks like a wheat field or something, so another color would make it look unusual.
May 1, 2005 at 1:47 am #120693TigerbladeParticipantthen i’d suggest fading out the background slightly… make it a little weaker color than it is right now. you can leave it as yellow, but dim it down, thin it out, something like that. make it a little transparent maybe. right now it overpowers the graphic and drowns out the words
May 1, 2005 at 2:19 am #120700colinMemberI made the background a little more transparent. I personally don’t like it that much, but just wanted to see what y’all thought about it.
May 1, 2005 at 2:53 am #120698AwesomeSauceParticipantI think that one is great. It’s not as hard on my eyes. 🙂 But do whatever you think is best.
May 1, 2005 at 3:03 am #120694TigerbladeParticipanti agree, looks a lot better. i would make the words all the same color, minus the yellow-white gradient, but that’s up to you.
it’s your sig, make it the way you like it and want it to look.
May 1, 2005 at 3:12 am #120696QwertyMemberPherhaps darken the background as well. So the words will stand out even more. It looks ok though.
May 1, 2005 at 5:25 am #120691detn8rParticipantOK, I think I’ll allow my perfectionism kick in ;D
– it looks noobish. although you do have nice skillz at photoshop, it honestly does look geocities-friendly.
– the font is perfect for a clan, but I still don’t like it. it doesn’t flow
– yellow is a suck ass colour. blue always works on many levels. blue also works way more professional
– with the unprofessional look of the image, your diplomacy may think the noob geocities clan from hell (muwhahaha)
– the background looks like a very ugly default gradient from a theme pack.OK, so I don’t want to take away your creative-eye but those are just my opinions. My suggestion is to loose your background, font and colour yellow. Use blue and a more professional background. Loose any gradients 😉
May 1, 2005 at 4:14 pm #120690Jeff HesterKeymasterBLEH! I’m on dialup now! It sucks so bad. Pages take soooo long to load. *growl* Anyway I like what you did except I think it’s a bit too yellow. With that said, I was bored and had nothing to do so I figured I’d take your ideas and expand on them a bit. This is what I came up with. I hope you like it.
By the way I saved it in highest quality so the image is about 200KB saved as a PNG file so it’s not really dialup friendly (trust me I KNOW, I’m on it right now). I can save it in a lower quality and make it about 40KB but I notice it loses some brightness in the yellow. I picked PNG so that the actual box frame around the burnt edges wouldn’t show. Another trick is just saving it as a jpeg and making sure the background is the same color as that of the forum or website you’d put it in. If you want to use it and want to lower its size just let me know.
May 2, 2005 at 3:01 am #120701colinMemberThat’s pretty good MiamiGuy. And Det, a little harsh there, don’t you think? Heh, but I’ll try to follow your advice and make it look more professional looking. I will post back here after I remake it (who knows, it may be a few weeks because finals are coming up).

May 2, 2005 at 11:06 pm #120695RabidKittenParticipantFinally someone agrees with me! *sigh, throws her arms down* Det, if you like, you may take part in my Anthony Shrine of Awesomeness *smiles sweetly*
*sigh* but really, I hate the color yellow, but there are instances that it can be used well. But too much of it is blinding. You need different tones, shades, things of that nature so your eye doesn’t get overwhelmed and can contrast with the rest of it. That’s what Ant was able to do with his version.
That and pair it with like colors. Orange (while also being my favorite color) is a close, second, it’s a Bruthu from Anuthu Muthu *grins coyly* And has much more versitility than Yellows “Be bright and glaring, or look like pee” kind of attitude. The two colors mingled together give a much more professional look to it, as well as breaks up the monotony for their eyes. (That doesn’t mean that black and yellow are that great either just because they’re different. Remember, certain combos are just goign to make peole think of somethign goofy…like…bumble bees. Red and Yellow is Ketchup and Mustard. Things like that. ) I generally stick to the idea that black is only useful as a thinner, like in painting. A lot of art schools actually teach that black is not a ‘color’ but a contrast element (same with white) since they’re so basic.Oh, and when making graphics for TV, we have some rules that generally apply no matter where you are.
-words should be large enough to read easily, and also, there should be no more than approx 15 words on any one graphic, no matter the information.
-Words should be at least 5 steps away on the “gray scale” of color from the background to be able to give it separation.
-If the background is patterned, the Words should be Plain. In turn, if the background is generally plain, the letters can be patterned. This helps with blending and separation again.
-ALWAYS use a boarder
-ALWAYS put some kind of an outline around words, very few few few things call for contrary.Another thing to worry about are little animals or graphic touches, accents, the like. Those are a bit more difficult to decide what to do with depending on your intentions, of course. But if you were going for more of an “incognito” look for your gryphon (By the way, my favorite mythical creature), try fading him in slowly, feather the lines a little maybe, or fade out one side more than another, let it gradually whisp in there, lines becoming solid again in the most vital part…something.
Those are some things to keep in mind. Also, try and experiment with different shapes of your pictures. I mean, personally, one of my favorite creations was this banner I did for DJ’s Song and Story thing. *points to attatchment* And a big part of it was because it wasn’t perfectly square.
Oh, and Graham, you’re a harsh little bitty! And this is coming from -me- of all people! *snickers* You’re just lucky we know better than to think you’re a mean spirited person *nod nod, wink* Much Love, all around.
May 3, 2005 at 2:52 am #120702colinMemberI had a little spare time, so I went ahead and made this.
Please keep in mind that it only took like 30 minutes and I will fix it up later. I don’t really like the text, it doesnt look very smooth. Any other suggestions?
