in a few weeks i’ll be going back to college… last year i started leaving my computer on pretty much 24/7 so that i could always be online, ie getting messages if need be. but that started to screw with my computer (combined with other things)… so i thought maybe if i just left my computer on ‘Standby’ mode overnight, the computer wouldnt be technically on… so my question is, is it possible to still be online (AIM and MSN) when the computer is in standby mode? i’d just check it myself right now but i’m on a modem and one phone line here at home…
(i’ll be running on a T1 connection at school if it makes a difference)August 9, 2003 at 7:02 pm #57498DavidParticipantQuote:quote:Originally posted by Tigerbladein a few weeks i’ll be going back to college… last year i started leaving my computer on pretty much 24/7 so that i could always be online, ie getting messages if need be. but that started to screw with my computer (combined with other things)… so i thought maybe if i just left my computer on ‘Standby’ mode overnight, the computer wouldnt be technically on… so my question is, is it possible to still be online (AIM and MSN) when the computer is in standby mode? i’d just check it myself right now but i’m on a modem and one phone line here at home…
(i’ll be running on a T1 connection at school if it makes a difference)Standby does not keep your Computer functioning the same as if it was in normal operating mode. Standby will pause your PC (for lack of a better term) and it allows you to start where you were when you put it into Standby.
You can look at http://www.ai-buddy.com it might help.
August 10, 2003 at 5:42 am #57500GaryInFLaMemberJust leave it on all the time, i do and never had a problem, but i would make sure that you have enough cooling (fans/exhaust) in your computer case so you don’t over heat your insides. If you turn stand-by on all that does is save your desktop to the hard drive in return making it easy to continue from where you left off, I think it will also close/disconnect your chat clients. Oh and make sure if you are online and you are using a broadband connection you have atleast some sort of firewall running.
