When I first heard about this movie, I said ‘Ehh..I think I’ll skip this one.’ But now I hear it’s #1 in the Box Office! I still am not going to see it, it looks…I dunno, just dumb I guess…
Did you see it yet? How was it? Should I change my mind and go see it?
EDIT: You gotta admit, the title is pretty neat, though. Kinda rolls off your tongue. Sky Captain and the World of Tomorow…

September 21, 2004 at 3:48 am #37826Jeff HesterKeymasterI saw it Saturday night. I bought tickets for the Bourne Supremacy but dinner finished late and I didn’t want to wait for the next show. “Sky Captain” really wasn’t on my list of “must see” movies, but it wasn’t bad.
It’s basically a live action comic-book story — part action, part romance and part sci-fi fantasy. Pure old-time B-movie matinee entertainment. Everything from the music to the dialogue to the “look” of the film was designed to evoke that nostalgic era.
There’s been a lot of discussion about the 3D graphics. From what I’ve read, the actors worked entirely in front of chroma key sets (blue or green screens). Everything that wasn’t human was computer-generated.
It’s not photorealistic, but it’s convincing in the old-style that they chose to mimic. Having done a lot of 3D graphics and animation (in a past life), I’m easily distracted by flaws in the graphics, but in the case of this film, the effects work well. Everything is soft, fuzzy and gray, much like the old movies of the past. I wasn’t “wowed” by the graphics, but then, isn’t that the point? Shouldn’t I be “wowed” by the movie itself?
Unfortunately, I wasn’t wowed by the movie, either. It was ok, but not great. I could’ve waited to rent it on DVD and been perfectly happy.
Note to self: next time, leave more time for dinner.
